Ben Shephard, the beloved This Morning host, has opened up about one of the toughest moments in his early career — a sudden and “brutal” sacking from Channel 4 that left him questioning his future in television.

The TV star, now 51, first rose to fame in the late 1990s on Channel 4’s The Bigger Breakfast alongside Josie D’Arby, Melanie Sykes, and Dermot O’Leary. But at just 25, Ben recalls being blindsided by his dismissal.

“It was brutal because it came out of nowhere. I thought I was going to be with Channel 4 for a couple of years. Then all of a sudden it was done, and I clearly hadn’t been good enough in that role. It was really hard coming away from that and suddenly not having an income or a job,” he revealed.
Yet the setback became a turning point. Ben explained that when “an opportunity comes along” after a disappointment, it makes you seize it even harder. That resilience eventually led him to ITV, where he has remained a household name, fronting shows like Ninja Warrior UK and This Morning.
Away from the cameras, Ben’s personal life has been a rock. Married to long-term partner Annie since 2004, the couple share two sons, Sam (born 2005) and Jack (born 2007). Ben recounted meeting Annie at university:
“I was just a puppy in the world of broadcasting. She has been through all this with me — the highs and the lows — and is still here, somehow still putting up with me. I feel extraordinarily lucky.”
From heartbreak to triumph, Ben Shephard’s early career setback proves that sometimes the toughest blows can pave the way to long-term success in television.
