Dr. Philippa Kaye, the beloved GP from This Morning, has bravely shared her emotional journey following her recent hysterectomy. The 46-year-old had previously been diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2019 and has been through a whirlwind of treatments, including chemotherapy and multiple surgeries.
At the end of 2020, Dr. Philippa was declared cancer-free after her courageous battle with the disease. However, in late January, she returned to the hospital for another round of surgery. This time, she underwent a hysterectomy—a decision that was strongly recommended due to her ongoing risk of cancer if she didn’t act.
Reflecting on Her Recovery
In a heartfelt post shared on social media this week, Dr. Philippa candidly discussed her thoughts and emotions as she recovers from the major surgery. “Post-op thoughts don’t always make practical, intellectual sense,” she wrote, revealing the conflicting emotions she has been navigating.

She explained: “Intellectually, I understand that the condition was causing problems, pain, and that I wasn’t planning further pregnancies. It wasn’t serving a purpose and was a cancer risk.” However, emotionally, it was a different story. “It was part of me, it housed my babies. Cancer forced me to make this decision, otherwise, it would still be there.”
Struggling with Emotional Turmoil
Dr. Philippa went on to express the emotional difficulty of losing her uterus and ovaries: “Am I somehow less of a woman without my womb and ovaries? I know this is not true. Sometimes you can know something in one part of your brain and feel something else in another. It is why feelings are hard.”
While the physical recovery from her surgery continues, Dr. Philippa is working through her emotional recovery as well, processing the impact of this life-altering decision.
Support from Fans and Colleagues
The brave GP has received an outpouring of support from her ITV colleagues and followers, with beauty editor Nadine Baggott expressing her encouragement on social media. One follower shared: “This is one time when it’s okay to listen to your heart instead of your head.” Another offered reassurance: “I felt the same after my hysterectomy, it’s hard, but you get through it. Sending lots of love your way.”
However, Dr. Philippa also received a few critical comments, with one follower pointing out the hardships of those who may never have had the chance to have children. Dr. Philippa responded kindly: “Absolutely, I am grateful for what I have.”
Grateful for What She Has
Despite the challenges, Dr. Philippa remains positive and focused on the blessings in her life. As a mother of three, she expresses gratitude for her children and the opportunity to continue sharing her story with the public. Her openness and vulnerability offer an important reminder that while the physical and emotional battles we face are unique, the strength to overcome them is universal.
Dr. Philippa Kaye’s journey is not just about battling cancer—it’s about embracing the decisions that shape our lives, even when they are difficult. And her message is clear: no matter the challenge, gratitude and resilience can guide us through the toughest times.
