Carson Daly has expressed his heartache over seeing his close friend, Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, still in a “tortured limbo state” more than 50 days after her mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing.
Appearing on Today on March 25, Daly shared the emotional toll of watching Savannah cope with the aftermath of the tragic disappearance. “It’s gut-wrenching to watch someone you love so much be, still post–50 days of this tragic event, in this tortured limbo state,” Daly, 52, said. “Yet to still show so much resilience among it all.”
Savannah’s mother, Nancy, 84, disappeared on January 31, with the FBI continuing to investigate her case. As the search for answers continues, Savannah’s strength and determination have been a source of admiration among her colleagues and viewers alike.
‘Unbearable’ Pain, But ‘No One Is Stealing Her Joy’
During the episode, Hoda Kotb, who has been supporting Savannah through this time, agreed with Daly’s sentiments, emphasizing that despite the agony, “no one is stealing her joy.” But Daly added, “No closer to closure… It’s been so long to see our friend still so tortured, this far after this horrible event.”
Savannah, 54, who has been keeping her emotions in check while still holding on to hope, sat down for her first interview since her mother’s disappearance. She revealed just how deeply the situation is affecting her. In an emotional preview, Savannah told Kotb, “We are in agony. It is unbearable… to think of what she went through. I wake up every night, every night in the middle of the night, and in the darkness, I imagine her terror.” :max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(1019x539:1021x541)/lester-holt-carol-hagen-1-b2838589410f45229046cfb979b6256e.jpg)
Savannah’s grief is palpable as she fights through the unbearable uncertainty of her mother’s fate, constantly grappling with thoughts of what Nancy might be enduring.
An Emotional Plea: ‘She Needs to Come Home Now’
In the deeply personal interview, Savannah shared her pain and desperation, adding, “I will not hide my face. But she needs to come home now.” Her words are a heartfelt plea for answers, hoping someone who may have witnessed something will come forward to help bring Nancy home.
Kotb, 61, described Savannah as having “a desperation and also a steeliness,” adding that her colleague’s strength and hope are unwavering despite the tragedy. “She talks about the investigation, her faith, and how she’s getting through,” Kotb said.
Hope for Answers
As the search for Nancy Guthrie enters its eighth week, there is still no sign of the missing 84-year-old. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the FBI or the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Savannah plans to return to Today in an official capacity soon, though no return date has been set. She briefly returned to the set in early March after her time in Arizona, marking a significant step in her journey toward healing.
As the investigation continues, fans and colleagues are rallying behind Savannah, supporting her during this harrowing time.
