A Healthcare Worker Called Out One Detail In Betsy’s Story
Sydney has been at the heart of one of Coronation Street’s biggest storylines after Betsy suffered a stroke caused by damage to an artery in her neck following consensual strangulation during sex with boyfriend Dylan Wilson. The storyline has been praised for raising awareness about the risks involved.
However, a manual handling trainer Jessie, noticed a problem with a recent hospital scene. The scene showed how Betsy was moved from her bed into a chair. She explained that the technique shown, known as the drag lift. But it is no longer used in the UK because it can lead to injuries such as dislocations.
Jessie also said she was concerned viewers might think the method shown on screen was correct. In her caption, she explained that the drag lift was condemned as unsafe practice by the RCN in 1981. It could even be reported as a safeguarding issue if used today.
Coronation Street Star Sydney Took The Feedback On Board
Rather than brushing the criticism aside, Sydney thanked Jessie for pointing it out. She wrote: “Thank you for clearing this up, stroke advisors consistently on set, but clearly this wasn’t updated knowledge.”
Jessie praised Sydney’s portrayal of Betsy’s recovery and said she understood that it is difficult for a fast-moving TV production to get every detail perfect. Sydney replied that she had done extensive personal research for the storyline but admitted some details were beyond her control.
She added that filming moves quickly, “things manage to slip through the cracks,” and promised to pass the feedback on to production because “it’s very important to get right.”
