“It’s the icing on the cake,” said Dame Mary, reflecting on the honor. She confessed she was “completely overwhelmed” by the announcement, adding: “What an honour for a cook to receive the Bafta Fellowship. I couldn’t believe it – for just doing what I love.”

The BAFTA Fellowship recognizes a lifetime of achievements in film, games, or television. In Dame Mary’s case, it’s her unmatched career spanning over six decades. BAFTA hailed her as “one of the UK’s most beloved broadcasters,” highlighting her work in transforming the landscape of television with The Great British Bake Off. Her role as a judge was groundbreaking, shifting the focus from cutthroat competition to warmth, encouragement, and joy, which, according to BAFTA, inspired a national resurgence in home baking and redefined competitive TV programming.

In addition to her role on the beloved baking show, Dame Mary’s career includes several decades of cooking specials and teaching millions of viewers the art of cooking with elegance and passion. Her charm and authenticity have left an indelible mark on British television, and she’s been a constant presence for over half a century.

Reflecting on her journey, Dame Mary shared that the proudest moment of her television career was filming her 2019 Christmas special, A Berry Royal Christmas, with the Prince and Princess of Wales. “They put their whole heart into making roulades and achieved great things, with a lot of laughter,” she recalled fondly.

Dame Mary’s incredible legacy was also acknowledged by BAFTA’s CEO Jane Millichip, who described her as a “singular talent” whose “warmth, craft, and generosity” have shaped British television. “Mary Berry has informed, inspired, and entertained audiences for over 60 years,” she said. “The BAFTA Fellowship is our highest honor, and we’re proud to celebrate her extraordinary legacy at this year’s BAFTA Television Awards.”

The BAFTA Television Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 10, at London’s Royal Festival Hall and will be broadcast live on BBC One and iPlayer.

Dame Mary’s story is nothing short of legendary, and her journey proves that kindness, craft, and passion can carve out a place in British hearts for generations.
