Denise Van Outen has opened up about reclaiming her freedom at 52, now that her daughter Betsy is growing more independent. The TV presenter and DJ welcomed Betsy in 2010 with ex-husband, West End star Lee Mead, following their 2009 marriage. Although they separated in 2013 due to demanding careers and long-distance strain, Denise has spoken candidly about the challenges of parenting largely on her own, describing it as “really challenging at times.”

Now with Betsy turning 16, Denise feels a renewed sense of independence. She shared: “She’s just turned 16, and I kind of stepped back a little bit. I feel like you get your freedom back, a bit of a second wind. Anyone with kids would relate to constantly worrying, but now I can relax a little.” She reflected on earlier years, recalling how leaving the house for work would fill her with guilt while Betsy was cared for by her grandmother.
Alongside motherhood, Denise has returned as Marella Cruises’ Chief Chill-Out Officer, encouraging Brits to embrace guilt-free relaxation while on holiday. She explained that her role involves helping passengers truly lean into downtime, enjoying a stress-free experience with stylish, comfortable outfits like the innovative PJkini that transitions from cabin to pool to restaurant effortlessly.
Denise highlighted the importance of planned breaks, saying: “I’ve realised the value of sitting away from everything and doing nothing. It’s a great mental and physical reset.” Her advice encourages people to prioritise self-care and embrace life’s small pleasures, balancing busy careers and personal life.
With her daughter now more independent, Denise is focusing on herself while continuing to inspire others. Her candid reflections on parenting, freedom, and the joy of leisure make her story both relatable and uplifting.
