The frantic search for Nancy Guthrie has reached a deeply troubling moment after Google quietly acknowledged that recovering additional surveillance footage from her home may no longer be possible.

Authorities investigating the disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie confirmed that while tech specialists have been working tirelessly to extract data from security cameras at her Arizona residence, the likelihood of uncovering more crucial video evidence is now considered slim.

Nancy’s home near Tucson, Arizona, was equipped with multiple security cameras. However, investigators have so far only managed to retrieve Google Nest footage from the front of the property, which captured a masked man approaching the front door — the last confirmed visual clue in the case.
According to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, detectives repeatedly pressed Google on whether additional footage could be salvaged from the system. The response, he revealed, was bleak.
“We don’t think we can get anything,” the company admitted, Nanos told NewsNation on Tuesday.
Investigators have also examined surveillance cameras from neighboring homes in the area, searching for any overlooked angles that could offer a breakthrough.
Complicating matters further, Nancy did not have an active subscription for her security cameras at the time — a factor the sheriff said makes the retrieval process exceptionally delicate.
“It’s like peeling paint,” Nanos explained. “You’ve got images over images over images. And you’ve got to peel back very carefully — because you might destroy the layer you actually need.”
Despite the setback, law enforcement officials are refusing to give up hope.
Footage released to the public last week triggered an explosion of response, generating nearly 5,000 tips from across the country. Investigators believe that even a single overlooked detail could prove critical.
The search for the missing family matriarch has now entered its 18th day, with pressure mounting and public concern continuing to grow.
Sheriff Nanos has repeatedly stressed his confidence that the case will be solved, insisting investigators are closing in.
“If you were the guy — if you were that monster — you should be worried,” he warned.
For now, Nancy Guthrie’s fate remains unknown. But authorities say the hunt is far from over — and that the truth, however hidden, will come out.
