Just one year ago, Patrick Mahomes was the face of the NFL’s merchandise empire. His No. 15 Kansas City Chiefs jersey was the second-best-selling in all of football.
Now? He isn’t even in the top 20.
According to figures released by NFL Shop on January 9, Mahomes has plunged to No. 22 in 2025 jersey sales — trailing Dak Prescott and sitting just ahead of Detroit Lions star Amon-Ra St. Brown.
A new king of the closet
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has surged to the top of the list, dethroning last year’s No. 6 spot to claim the crown. The No. 2 position now belongs to New England Patriots rookie sensation Drake Maye.
Rounding out the top tier are a mix of rising stars and familiar faces: Fred Warner, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Saquon Barkley, Caleb Williams and CeeDee Lamb. Three more 49ers — Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle and Brock Purdy — follow, while Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts sits just outside the top ten at No. 11.
A brutal year takes its toll
Mahomes’ collapse off the merchandise charts mirrors his toughest season yet.
In February, he and the Chiefs were overwhelmed by Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. Then came a frustrating 2025 campaign that ended with Kansas City missing the playoffs — and, in a cruel final twist, Mahomes tearing his ACL in a must-win finale.
Days later, he shared two haunting Instagram photos: one showing him trudging off the field with his head down, the other frozen in time — soaring into the end zone, a reminder of who he still is.
The comeback clock is ticking
Mahomes underwent surgery immediately and is deep into rehab. Chiefs vice president of sports medicine Rick Burkholder estimates a recovery timeline of roughly nine months, giving Mahomes a realistic chance to return for Week 1 of the 2026 season.
“Every player is different,” Burkholder said. “But Patrick is so in tune with his body, he tends to do things quicker.”
Once the NFL’s most untouchable superstar, Mahomes now finds himself chasing more than wins.
He’s chasing relevance — and the chance to remind the world why his jersey once ruled them all.
