Gemma Atkinson and Gorka Marquez have made it clear—there is “no chance” they’ll ever marry, despite getting engaged five years ago.
The Hollyoaks actress, 41, and Strictly Come Dancing pro dancer, 35, have been a couple since 2018, after meeting on the BBC dance show. They got engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2021 and are parents to daughter Mia, six, and son Thiago, two.
However, during a recent episode of their podcast, Lost In Translation, the couple shocked fans when they revealed that marriage is not in their future.
When asked about wedding plans, Gemma responded firmly: “I ain’t getting married to him. No chance.”
Gorka agreed, adding, “I don’t think I want to get married.”
Gemma elaborated, saying, “Everyone I know who has gotten married has ended up getting divorced, apart from my sister.”
Gorka, on the other hand, explained that they’re perfectly happy without a wedding, stating, “We are fine like this, we have two children, marriage is just a document for a legal thing.”
Gemma admitted that she had briefly considered marriage, primarily for the sake of their children. “My mum was saying to me the other day, when it comes to my will, she was saying how much more complicated it is,” she said. But when Gorka responded confused, she clarified, “It’s not about you, you idiot, it’s about the kids. I need to put it in a will.”
This conversation comes after Gemma shared the difficulties she’s faced in her relationship with Gorka, especially after his decision to leave Strictly Come Dancing. Gorka, who confirmed his departure from the show last week, had been a staple of the Strictly dance floor for years. He explained in a heartfelt post that he’d made the decision to leave due to scheduling conflicts with Dancing With The Stars Spain.
“I’ve decided that now is the time to hang up my dance shoes and say goodbye to Strictly Come Dancing,” he wrote. “Being part of the show has been so much more than just a professional opportunity – it allowed me to build a career from my passion, find love, start a family, and make lifelong friends. For that, I will forever be thankful.”
Gemma and Gorka’s relationship has seen its ups and downs, with moments of tension, such as when Gorka returned from New York and upset Gemma by acting as though he was inspecting the house. In a clip shared on Instagram, Gemma recalled, “I thought ‘Shut the f*** up, Gorka,’ and I just stomped upstairs.”
Despite their relationship struggles, the couple continues to be parents to their young children and share a close bond. Gorka’s recent decision to step back from Strictly is a significant change for the couple, but it marks a new chapter for them.
The Strictly pro’s departure follows the news that other professionals, including Luba Mushtuk, Karen Hauer, Nadiya Bychkova, and Michelle Tsiakkas, will no longer be part of the show. The search for their replacements is still underway, and Strictly producers have yet to announce new hosts after Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly’s exit following the 2025 Christmas Special.
