Hayden Panettiere has opened up about the incredibly painful decision to give up custody of her daughter, Kaya, now 11, due to struggles with addiction and postpartum depression. The Heroes star, 36, who signed over custody of her daughter to ex-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko back in 2018, expressed the heartache she felt, saying it was “the hardest thing” she has ever done.

A Painful Decision Amid Personal Struggles
In an emotional interview on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, Hayden revealed how she “desperately” needed help at the time and clarified that Kaya, who now lives in Europe with Wladimir, never felt “abandoned.” She admitted that her mental health struggles, including postpartum depression and anxiety, left her feeling “completely lost,” which led her to seek help.

“The idea that anyone would think I gave away my child and was okay with it is heartbreaking,” Hayden said. “I was struggling, and I couldn’t even act my way through it anymore. I was miserable, in tears all the time, and I tried to self-medicate, which only made things worse.”
A Difficult Transition for Kaya and Hayden
The actress spoke candidly about how her initial reaction to Wladimir’s suggestion that Kaya live with him in Europe was less than positive. “I went like a mother lion. I would’ve burnt the world down for my child. So that was incredibly difficult,” she admitted. But as time passed and her health improved, Hayden acknowledged that Kaya had built a stable life in Europe, and moving her would have been “selfish.”
Panettiere praised Wladimir for being “incredibly supportive” throughout the process, even though he didn’t fully understand what was going on. She also credited him for putting Kaya’s well-being above all else.
Rebuilding Her Life and Relationship with Kaya
Hayden reassured fans that her bond with Kaya remains strong. “I have an incredible relationship with her. I travel as much as I can to see her and spend a lot of time on FaceTime. We have a really deep, intense bond,” Hayden said. “I know she feels loved by both of her parents and knows that we would do anything to make sure she’s happy and healthy.”
The actress also spoke about her battle with postpartum depression, describing it as something she never saw coming. “I had this beautiful idea in my head of the mother I would be, but when Kaya came into my life, I knew something was terribly wrong,” she shared. “Postpartum depression has so much stigma around it. People think you should just ‘snap out of it,’ but it’s not that simple.”
Revealing the Painful Moments of Her Journey
In a shocking revelation, Hayden also discussed a traumatic moment from her past when she was just 18. She recalled being placed in bed with a “very famous man” while on a boat. “I thought I was so mature, but I wasn’t capable of being fully aware of the danger I was in,” she said, reflecting on the naivety she had at that age.
The Journey of Healing
As Hayden continues to heal, her story serves as a reminder of the struggles that many face behind the scenes. Her openness about her mental health and motherhood challenges is both powerful and relatable for those who have experienced similar difficulties.
