For more than five decades, Dame Judi Dench has been the nation’s steady presence — dignified, witty, endlessly resilient.
But in a rare moment of stillness, she has revealed that the love she shared with her late husband, actor Michael Williams, never truly faded.
It simply changed shape.
In a one-off Sky Arts special, Tea with Judi Dench, the 91-year-old legend invites viewers into her 17th-century Surrey home, where she spends an afternoon with longtime friend Sir Kenneth Branagh. The pair wander through her garden, sip tea, and gently reflect on lives spent in the theatre and on screen.
Yet it is one quiet conversation that leaves the deepest mark.
A portrait, a pause — and a lifetime of memories
Inside the house hangs a painted portrait of Michael — the man Judi married in 1971 and loved for nearly 30 years until his death from lung cancer in 2001, just weeks before their anniversary.
When Kenneth pauses in front of the artwork, his voice softens.
“It’s such a wonderful likeness of the brilliant Michael Williams,” he tells her.
Judi looks at the painting for a long moment before replying, barely above a whisper:
“I love it. I really love it.”
Her eyes glisten, and for a heartbeat the years fall away.
A love story written on stage and screen
Judi and Michael shared not just a home, but a craft. Shortly after marrying, they performed together in The Merchant of Venice — she as Portia, he as Bassanio. Years later, Michael appeared in Henry V, directed by Kenneth, playing the soldier who bears his own name.
As they watch a clip from the film, Judi grows visibly emotional. Kenneth gently describes Michael’s talent — his presence, his piercing eyes, his unmistakable charm.
“He was a handsome lad, wasn’t he?” he says.
Judi nods, tears forming.
“He was.”
A home filled with remembrance
After Michael’s passing, Judi remained in the six-acre estate they moved to in 1995, creating what she calls her “memorial forest.” There, a tree stands in his honour — not as a monument to loss, but as a living reminder of the life they shared.
They had one daughter, actress Finty Williams, now 53, and Judi is a devoted grandmother to Finty’s son, Sam, 28 — the family bond continuing through generations.
Love that does not leave
Though Michael died surrounded by loved ones at their home, Judi has never spoken of him in the past tense.
In this quiet television moment, surrounded by flowers, memories and an old friend, she makes something achingly clear:
He may be gone —
but he was never lost.
Tea with Judi Dench airs 22 December on Sky Arts, Freeview and streaming service NOW.
