Loose Women star Janet Street-Porter, 78, has revealed she is facing another major surgery after being admitted to the hospital for a knee replacement operation. This comes after she recently underwent hip replacement surgery, with the presenter admitting that her journey to recovery hasn’t been easy.
In a candid interview with Metro, Janet opened up about her ongoing health struggles, saying: “I’ve got a lot to say about how pensioners get talked about. There are things about getting older that are annoying. I had a hip replacement last year, sailed through that, got back to work,” she shared, referring to her earlier operation.
Janet continued: “Before that, I’d had a knee replacement… and now I’ve got to have another knee replacement. I get annoyed that my body isn’t bionic. In my 20s and 30s, I was fit, and then I over-exercised. I overdid it, and the result has been my joints [have worn out].”
The TV personality, who has been a fixture on Loose Women since 2011, expressed her frustration with the common perceptions of aging, particularly when it comes to physical activity. “Saying to people of my generation, ‘Listen, if you can walk and get a newspaper, that’s good enough.’ For f***’* sake, stop counting steps,” she quipped, clearly frustrated with the expectations placed on older adults.
In 2024, following her hip replacement surgery, Janet revealed her mental and physical struggles, admitting that the process had left her feeling “depressed” and stressed. “It was really depressing me. I lost weight through the stress of it, I wasn’t eating very much. I was a complete mega misery-wad and my normal misery face,” she confessed during a Loose Women episode. “Now it is up to me to really try to stick to physio and do all these exercises. Sleeping is not that easy, but mentally I’ve come out better.”
Janet also shared that she had stopped using heavy-duty painkillers, which she found made her feel “cocooned” from reality. She explained, “I took the decision five days ago to stop the heavy-duty painkillers because otherwise, you are cocooned. Last week I went to my house in Whitstable and had two sets of physio. I’m putting myself in the hands of professionals, but you know me, I’m stubborn. But I’ve got to do the exercises.”
Janet’s ongoing health journey, while challenging, reflects her resilience and determination to push through the pain. As she faces yet another surgery, fans and colleagues alike are wishing her strength and sending their best for a speedy recovery.
