Gail Porter has shared the emotional story of being approached by police after scattering her father’s ashes at sea, revealing a mix of grief and surreal encounters. The beloved TV star lost her father, Craig, in 2020, aged 72, following a sudden massive brain haemorrhage.
Posting a black and white image of herself at the sea, Gail recounted: “That day when you scatter your dad’s ashes. At least I got him home. And when the police on Portobello Beach in Edinburgh said… ‘Are you Gail Porter?’ I, of course, said… ‘No.’ They asked, ‘Did you get permission to scatter ashes in the sea?’” She reflected on the surreal moment: “‘No… you can dive in and get them out if you want.’ Ahhhh… life, death, police have bigger things to worry about. Funny old world. Remember the good things.”
Craig had passed away in May 2020, the night after Gail’s BBC documentary, ‘Being Gail Porter’, aired. The suddenness of his death coincided with the Covid-19 pandemic and Spain’s imminent lockdown, leaving Gail with just a week to fly from Edinburgh to Spain to identify and cremate her father, ultimately bringing him home. She described placing him in a bag marked ‘happy’ to avoid questions during travel.
Gail credits her father with supporting her through challenging times. After being declared bankrupt in 2017 and living on just £200 a month, Craig helped her financially, paying her rent for a one-bedroom flat and offering guidance during her mental health struggles.
Throughout her life, Gail has faced post-natal depression, bipolar disorder, and was sectioned under the Mental Health Act in 2011. Despite these hardships, she highlights the enduring impact of her father’s kindness, emphasizing how he helped her regain stability and hope.
