In a deeply moving interview, James Middletonâentrepreneur, mental health advocate, and brother to the Princess of Walesâhas opened up about how his late dog, Ella, was his lifeline during his battle with crippling depression.
James, 39, shared the powerful impact his beloved spaniel had on him during his darkest days when he struggled to communicate with family and friends. Ella wasnât just a petâshe was his constant companion, offering silent comfort and helping him navigate his mental health journey when he felt completely disconnected from the world around him.
Speaking candidly to Good Morning Britain on April 24, James revealed how, during his depression, he couldnât find the words to speak to his family. âElla was the dog that I credit with saving my life,â he said. âIt was a time when I couldnât connect with humans⊠Ella somehow understood how I was feeling.â
During his therapy sessions, James shared that he struggled to voice his emotions, but when his therapist suggested he talk to Ella, it was then that he was able to express feelings he couldnât articulate before. âI was able to speak to Ella, and fortunately, she brought things out of me that I couldnât vocalise previously,â he explained.
From Struggling to Thrive: Ellaâs Lasting Impact
Ellaâs role in James’ recovery wasnât just about emotional supportâshe also encouraged him to get outside, even on his hardest days. âElla would pull me out of the house, even if it was pouring with rain or freezing cold,â James recalled. âShe was always there, giving me a serotonin rush that helped me feel better.â
It wasnât just Jamesâ health that benefited from Ellaâs presenceâhe credits her for introducing him to his wife, AlizĂ©e. James recounts meeting AlizĂ©e at the South Kensington Club in 2014, when Ella made a beeline for her, leading to an unexpected conversation. What started as a simple apology for Ella’s antics turned into the beginning of a beautiful love story.
In an emotional tribute, James described how Ella remained by his side, attending therapy sessions with him, never judging, simply offering unconditional support. âElla has been a huge reason I was able to overcome my struggles,â James said.
A Legacy of Love and Support
Jamesâ journey from depression to recovery has inspired many, and he continues to share his story with others in the hopes of raising awareness for mental health. His deep bond with Ella has also led him to found Ella & Co, a dog food company, in her honor.
Reflecting on how she has impacted his life, James says: âElla was there when I was a teenager, all the way to adulthood, and passed away right before we found out my wife was expecting. Sheâs left an indelible mark on my heart.â
Ella may no longer be with him, but her memory lives on in Jamesâ journey to raise awareness for mental health and in the love he shares with his growing family.
