Jimmy Kimmel Finally Reveals How His Children Reacted After His Show Was Suspended — One Heartwarming Response, One Completely Unexpected Twist

Jimmy Kimmel has opened up about one of the most emotional moments of his career, revealing how his two youngest children responded after learning that Jimmy Kimmel Live! had been temporarily suspended — and their reactions couldn’t have been more different.

Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on September 30, the longtime late-night host reflected on the difficult day ABC halted production of his show and shared the touching family moments that followed once he returned home.

Kimmel, 57, is the father of four children. He shares daughter Katie, 34, and son Kevin, 32, with his first wife, Gina Maddy, while he and his wife, Molly McNearney, are parents to daughter Jane, 11, and son Billy, 8. The couple married in 2013.

During the interview, Kimmel recalled receiving the unexpected phone call about the suspension while he was in the bathroom. After processing the news, he gathered several executive producers, including McNearney, to explain what had happened.

The decision came just before the team was scheduled to tape a new episode, forcing production to stop and the studio audience to be sent home. Kimmel said he remained at the studio for a couple of hours before returning home with his wife, where their children were waiting.

Although both children sensed something was wrong, they handled the situation in completely different ways.

Kimmel shared that his daughter Jane immediately tried to help by offering to sell her collection of Labubus if the family needed money. Stephen Colbert described the gesture as “lovely,” while Kimmel admitted it deeply touched him.

His younger son Billy, however, reacted in a way only a child could.

“Our son just got naked and started running around the house,” Kimmel joked, prompting laughter from the audience.

The television host admitted that the suspension initially left him fearing the worst. Having hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live! since 2003, he believed the decision might mark the end of his career on late-night television.

“I thought, ‘That’s it. It’s over. I’m never coming back on the air,'” Kimmel confessed. He added that his wife later remarked how pale he looked while breaking the news to his production team.

The show’s suspension followed mounting political pressure surrounding comments Kimmel made after the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

Fortunately, the interruption proved temporary. Six days later, on September 23, Jimmy Kimmel Live! returned to ABC.

During his emotional comeback monologue, Kimmel criticized President Donald Trump and the Federal Communications Commission while also addressing the controversy surrounding his earlier remarks. At one point, he became visibly emotional while discussing Kirk’s death and speaking about Kirk’s wife, Erika.

Kimmel stressed that he never intended to make light of a tragic loss.

“It’s important to me as a human,” he told viewers. “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it.”

He also referenced an Instagram message he shared on the day of the shooting, explaining that he had offered condolences to Kirk’s family and urged compassion because he sincerely meant every word.

At the same time, Kimmel acknowledged that some viewers believed his comments during the controversy were insensitive or poorly timed.

“I understand why some people were upset,” he said. “If the situation had been reversed, there’s a good chance I would have felt the same way.”

His candid reflections offered viewers a rare glimpse into how a deeply personal family moment helped him navigate one of the most uncertain chapters of his broadcasting career.
