Dench’s recent health struggles, stemming from an age-related eye condition, have led her to step back from the limelight. In an emotional interview with her longtime friend and collaborator Ian McKellen, she openly discussed the realities of living with age-related macular degeneration, which causes central vision loss. “No, you don’t [see me on camera], because I can’t see anymore,” she said, revealing the impact her condition has had on her life and career. Dench’s sense of humor hasn’t faltered despite the difficulties. In the interview, when McKellen joked that they could still see her, she laughed and replied, “Yes, and I can see your outline and I know you so well, in your Macbeth scarf. But I can’t recognize anybody now.” She admitted, “I can’t see the television, I can’t see to read,” further highlighting the profound changes in her life. Since being diagnosed in 2012, Dench has continued to work but admitted that taking on long roles has become increasingly challenging. She revealed, “It’s difficult for me if I have any length of a part. I haven’t yet found a way. But I have a photographic memory, and so many friends help me with the scripts.” Her most recent work includes a cameo in Spirited, the 2022 Christmas musical with Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, as well as a recent UK holiday ad.

Despite the challenges of living with a degenerative condition, Dench has remained committed to supporting causes close to her heart. Alongside McKellen, she’s been backing an initiative aimed at revitalizing William Shakespeare’s curriculum in schools, using rehearsals as a means to bring the Bard’s work to life for students.
