Katie Piper has revealed she is “entering a new era” after travelling to Germany for groundbreaking cosmetic treatment on her damaged eye — sharing striking before-and-after images that have left fans deeply moved.
The TV presenter, author and campaigner, 41, took to Instagram on Wednesday to document her emotional journey to Hamburg, where she underwent specialist work to fit a new glass eye prosthesis — a milestone moment following years of complex medical treatment.
Katie’s life was irrevocably changed in 2008 when she suffered devastating facial injuries in a sulphuric acid attack orchestrated by her former boyfriend Daniel Lynch and carried out by his accomplice Stefan Sylvestre. She was just 24 at the time.
Since then, Katie Piper has endured countless painstaking procedures to address extensive scarring, tissue damage and skin contraction — a long and often painful road to recovery that she has never shied away from sharing publicly.
A Journey to Hamburg — and a Turning Point
For her latest treatment, Katie travelled to Hamburg to visit the Institute for Artificial Eyes, a family-run clinic specialising in bespoke glass and plastic eye prostheses designed to restore facial balance and support both physical and psychological healing.
Accompanied by her husband Richard Sutton, Katie shared a highlights reel of the trip on Instagram, including close-up footage of her eye both before and after the glass prosthesis was fitted.
The transformation was subtle yet powerful.
Clearly delighted with the results, Katie praised the clinic’s meticulous work, writing:

According to the clinic’s website, each prosthesis is individually crafted to suit the patient’s needs, with the goal of restoring harmony and confidence after life-altering injuries.
‘Something Was Missing’
Katie’s trip to Germany came during a period of deep reflection about her health and future. She has previously revealed that she made the heartbreaking decision to give up her dream of having a third child after an emergency operation on her damaged eye.
Speaking candidly, Katie explained that filming the TV series Locked Up at New Orleans Parish Prison — where she spent time with incarcerated mothers separated from their children — prompted her to consider trying for another baby.
“It made me think, ‘This is my last chance,’” she said. “If I don’t do it now, I never will.”
However, the need for further eye surgery under general anaesthetic meant trying for a baby was no longer possible at that time.
“You can’t be trying for a baby and also having unexpected surgeries,” she explained. “That scuppered that.”
Although she and Richard later tried again, it ultimately didn’t happen.
Choosing Healing in a Different Way
Katie admitted she considered IVF but, after enduring more than 250 medical procedures since the 2008 attack, she felt unable to face more hospital appointments — or the emotional toll if it failed.
Still, she felt something was missing.
That feeling eventually led her to volunteer at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, where she later adopted a puppy — a calm, half-cockapoo named Sugar — describing the decision as one that brought new joy and balance into her life.
A Life Rebuilt, Step by Step
Katie, who married Richard in 2015, is a mother to two daughters, Belle, 11, and Penelope, seven. Despite the unimaginable trauma she endured in her twenties — including sexual assault and life-changing injuries — she has rebuilt her life with resilience, advocacy and honesty.
Her latest journey to Hamburg marks not just a cosmetic change, but another chapter in a story defined by survival, strength and self-acceptance.
