Janet Street-Porter, the iconic Loose Women presenter and journalist, has revealed the story behind her quietly held wedding to long-term partner Peter Spanton, admitting that embarrassment played a big part in keeping the ceremony private.

The couple, who have been together for 26 years, married in January in an intimate ceremony attended by just four guests. Speaking on Tuesday’s episode of Loose Women, Janet explained that the secrecy stemmed from her previous four marriages and a desire to avoid repeating past mistakes.

“I didn’t tell anybody at all,” she admitted, recalling how she and Peter discussed the wedding for months. “I mean, we’ve been together for like, 26 years. We’ve been through so much. And in the end, we talked about it… I’d always thought, you know, it’s embarrassing.”

Janet, now 79, described her feelings before the ceremony: “I got myself in a complete state the day before. I was shaking. I was so nervous.” Her anxiety, she said, was rooted in past regrets. “I didn’t want to do anything embarrassing that I would regret. I didn’t want to make fun of Peter. I wanted it to be lovely for him because he hasn’t been married before.”

She added candidly: “Frankly, I’ve been married a lot of times before. The last one was a big mistake on my part… That was when I was 50. And I guess I thought, it’s embarrassing. I don’t know how I’m going to handle it. I’m still embarrassed.”

Despite the nerves and secrecy, Janet confirmed that she and Peter found joy in their special day, with the intimate setting and careful planning helping them create a meaningful and memorable ceremony.
The wedding footage shown on Loose Women brought genuine surprise from co-hosts, with Christine Lampard remarking: “We were all in a bit of a shock last week when we all received this video from Janet!”
After decades of high-profile life in television, Janet’s story reminds fans that even the most celebrated stars can seek privacy, humility, and a personal moment of happiness away from the public eye.
