Mark Wright has opened up about one of the darkest moments of his life, revealing how a crushing career setback left him feeling like his entire world had fallen apart.
Speaking during a heartfelt Father’s Day special on Heart Saturday Breakfast, the presenter sat down with his father, Mark Wright Snr — affectionately known as “Big Mark” — for an emotional conversation about family, resilience and the life lessons that continue to shape him today.
A Father’s Advice That Still Guides Him
To celebrate Father’s Day, Mark treated his dad to a relaxing spa day complete with a sauna and cold plunge. But what began as a light-hearted outing soon turned into a deeply personal discussion.
Now more than a year into fatherhood after welcoming daughter Palma Elizabeth with wife Michelle Keegan in March 2025, Mark reflected on how much his own upbringing influences the way he parents.
“I’m over a year into fatherhood now,” he said.
His father praised the way Mark had embraced his new role.
“You took to it like a duck to water. I can’t believe it! Well, actually I can because I was very similar,” Big Mark joked. “You’ve done really well.”
Mark admitted he feels incredibly fortunate to have grown up with parents who set such a strong example.
“We’ve been very lucky, me, my brother and my sisters, to have a dad like you and mum so we can learn from it,” he said. “I feel like a lot of my fathering comes from how you fathered us.”
His father replied simply:
“You’ll bring her up how you were brought up.”
Mark agreed, saying he already notices himself repeating the same little habits and values his parents passed on to him.
“My World Came Crashing Down”
The conversation then turned to one of the biggest disappointments of Mark’s early life.
Long before becoming a television personality, Mark dreamed of making it as a professional footballer. But after being released by his club at a young age, he admits everything seemed to collapse.
“It was all I wanted to do,” Mark recalled.
“When I got released at a young age, my world came crashing down.”
Instead of giving up, however, he found inspiration much closer to home.
Mark revealed that watching his father rebuild his own life after experiencing major setbacks taught him that failure doesn’t have to be permanent.
“I watched you go through what you went through when you were younger,” Mark told his dad. “You were basically on the floor and managed to get back.”
Big Mark’s Powerful Lesson About Success
Big Mark didn’t hide how difficult those years had been.
“I was on the floor from being up here,” he admitted, gesturing above his head.
“But that taught me a lot.”
Curious about how his father found the strength to keep going, Mark asked what motivated him to rebuild.
Big Mark explained that resilience—and a willingness to take risks—made all the difference.
“Some people love working nine to five, and that’s absolutely fine,” he said. “But I always wanted to work for myself, and I just take chances.”
“It doesn’t matter how low I got. It’s about being resilient—and that’s what I’ve tried to teach you.”
Mark said those lessons became the foundation of his own work ethic.
“I honestly believe that’s what’s led me into being as driven as I am,” he said.
From Heartbreak to Happiness
Today, Mark’s life looks very different from the one he imagined as a young football hopeful.
After building a successful career in television and radio, he is now also enjoying life as a devoted husband and father.
Looking back, the setback that once felt devastating ultimately became the turning point that helped shape the person—and parent—he has become.
His emotional conversation with his father offered a touching reminder that even life’s biggest disappointments can become the beginning of something even greater.
