Peter Alexander, the beloved Today co-host and NBC News’ chief White House correspondent, has made the difficult decision to leave the network after an incredible 22-year career.

The 49-year-old news anchor shared the emotional news with viewers during a recent broadcast, revealing that he’s stepping away from his long-held role in order to find a better balance between his professional and personal life. “I’ve been away from my home more than 80 nights in the last seven months, more than 220 Friday nights away from my family in the last seven years,” he said.

Alexander first joined Today’s weekend taping in 2018 and became NBC’s co-chief White House correspondent three years later. But after years of commitment, he’s now seeking new challenges.
“I’ve had the most incredible experience over 22 years with NBC News – from Baghdad to Banda Aceh, Burbank to Beijing – alongside the best, most professional and most dedicated journalists in the business,” he added, emotional. “But now, I’m excited to focus on my family. Family first, the rest is details.”

While Alexander’s departure comes as a surprise, there are reports that he has grown frustrated with being passed over for bigger anchor roles at the network. “He’d be the first to say he’s had ambitions for the top anchor jobs, and with all of those spots recently filled, he’s going to try something new,” a source told Page Six.
As the speculation swirls about his next career move, some believe Alexander may be heading to MS Now for an 11 a.m. weekday slot. But for now, it remains unclear where his next destination will be.
In his final message to fans, Alexander also wished Today host Savannah Guthrie well, as she is preparing to return to the show after her absence due to her mother’s disappearance. “It’s family first for me,” Alexander said, reflecting on his decision and his future path.
Fans have been flooding social media with messages of support, wishing Peter well in his new endeavors. His departure marks the end of an era at NBC, but fans can’t help but wonder what’s next for the anchor who has been a staple of Today for more than two decades.
