When the BBC unveiled a brand-new era for Strictly Come Dancing, fans were left stunned by the unexpected hosting lineup. While many had predicted Rylan Clark would be one of the familiar faces stepping into the famous ballroom, the coveted role instead went to Emma Willis, Johannes Radebe and Josh Widdicombe.
Now, after weeks of speculation, Rylan has finally shared exactly how he feels about watching one of his closest friends land the television job that many believed was his to lose.
The Job Many Thought Was Waiting for Him
Following the departure of long-time presenters Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, rumours swirled for months over who would inherit one of British television’s most iconic presenting roles.
Among the names repeatedly linked to the position was Rylan Clark.
The popular presenter seemed like a natural choice. Having fronted Strictly: It Takes Two and become a much-loved member of the Strictly family, many viewers assumed he would be high on the BBC’s shortlist.
Instead, the broadcaster surprised audiences by announcing an entirely fresh trio of presenters: Emma Willis, professional dancer Johannes Radebe and comedian Josh Widdicombe.
Although many expected disappointment from Rylan, his reaction has been anything but bitter.

“I’m So Over the Moon for Emma”
Speaking in a new interview with Metro, Rylan couldn’t have sounded happier for his longtime friend.
“I’m so over the moon for Em,” he said warmly. “She’s perfect for that job.”
His praise didn’t stop there.
Rylan also celebrated Johannes Radebe’s appointment, describing the professional dancer as someone he “absolutely adores.”

“I think he’s just going to be amazing,” he said. “I really hope we still get to see him dance as well because his talent is just ridiculous.”
He also had kind words for Josh Widdicombe, revealing that the pair have always enjoyed a great relationship.
Rather than dwelling on what could have been, Rylan chose to celebrate the people who did get the opportunity.
A Friendship That Goes Back Years
Rylan and Emma’s friendship stretches back long before this latest career milestone.
The pair first became close while working together during the Channel 5 era of Big Brother. Over the years they’ve reunited on numerous occasions, regularly presenting This Morning together whenever regular hosts were away.
Their easy chemistry on screen has made them one of daytime television’s most popular partnerships, making Rylan’s wholehearted support for Emma feel entirely genuine.
Ready for a Brand-New Chapter
While many fans were initially surprised by the BBC’s decision, Rylan believes the new combination could bring something exciting to the long-running entertainment show.
“I’m so excited to see how that’s going to look,” he admitted.
“I think we were all like, ‘This is a bit random.’ But I’ve got no doubt it’s going to be absolutely amazing. It’s a new era for Strictly.”
He also acknowledged the enormous challenge facing the new presenters.
“Anyone following Tess and Claud has got to have some big balls to do it,” he joked.
“But with the power of three, I think they’ll have a lovely time.”
His comments reflected admiration for the outgoing hosts while expressing confidence that the new team can build their own identity rather than simply trying to replace two television legends.
Emma Willis Faces an Emotional New Challenge
Emma herself has never hidden her love of Strictly Come Dancing, making the appointment particularly meaningful.
When the BBC confirmed the news, she admitted she was still struggling to believe it.
“It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Strictly,” Emma said.
“I’ve cheered and danced along from my sofa for years, so stepping into the Strictly ballroom is something I still can’t quite comprehend.”
She also paid an emotional tribute to Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman.
“It’s impossible to fill the shoes they’ve left behind,” she said. “They’re two incredible women who have been the beating heart of Strictly for so long.”
Instead of trying to replace them, Emma said she simply hopes the new team can guide the programme into its next chapter with the same warmth and passion audiences have loved for years.
A New Era Begins
The BBC introduced the presenting trio with a playful promotional video shared across social media.
Emma and Johannes were seen taking their seats in front of the camera while Josh revealed himself as the cameraman before eventually joining the pair, all accompanied by the upbeat tune Three Is the Magic Number.
Even Tess Daly gave the trio her public blessing, commenting: “Can’t wait to tune in. The ultimate trio.”
As Strictly Come Dancing prepares to return later this year, one thing has become clear. Although Rylan Clark may not have secured the role many expected him to, he has shown remarkable grace, putting friendship ahead of disappointment and proving that sometimes the biggest story isn’t who gets the job—but how others choose to celebrate them.
