Savannah Guthrie is baring her soul about the immense challenge of returning to work while her mother, Nancy Guthrie, remains missing. The 54-year-old “Today” anchor joined Jenna Bush Hager on Monday, June 8, for an emotional conversation during the show’s fourth hour, revealing how she has navigated grief while continuing to host live every day.
“It’s really hard to come back. I’ve been trying so hard to hold it together,” Guthrie admitted, her voice breaking. Despite the pain, she said her role brings her a “little respite” and joy, thanks to the camaraderie of her coworkers who feel like family.
Guthrie described the daily struggle candidly: “I cry every morning on the way to work, and I cry every morning on the way home. But my mom would have said, ‘Honey, just keep going,’ and that’s what I try to do.”
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was reported missing in Arizona on February 1. Authorities say she was taken from her home against her will, and the family has offered a $1 million reward for information leading to her safe return. Savannah took a two-month break from the show before returning on April 6, opening her first broadcast with a heartfelt thank you to supporters for their prayers and kindness.
Reflecting on her decision to return, Savannah explained to Hoda Kotb, “It’s hard to imagine doing it, because it’s such a place of joy and lightness. I can’t come back and try to be something I’m not. But I can’t not come back, because it’s my family. My joy will be my answer, and being there is joyful. And when it’s not, I’ll say so.”
Hager reassured her colleague, saying, “We’ll have your back. We’ll be with you forever.” It’s a powerful reminder that even in the midst of heartbreak, love, family, and resilience can shine through.
Savannah Guthrie continues to anchor “Today,” inspiring viewers with her strength and vulnerability as the search for her mother continues.
