Sky News star Jacquie Beltrao has bravely opened up about her emotional journey with breast cancer, sharing heart-wrenching details of her struggle and the terrifying moments when she feared the worst.
In a powerful Instagram post, the 60-year-old Dublin-born TV presenter revealed how she faced her diagnosis and treatment with unwavering strength, despite the fear and uncertainty she felt. Jacquie was first diagnosed with breast cancer on Christmas Eve in 2014, but after undergoing surgery and treatment, she was given the all-clear. However, seven years later, the devastating news came again — the cancer had returned, and this time, it was stage 4 and deemed incurable.
Speaking about the intense treatment she underwent, Jacquie described her emotions during both diagnoses. “The first time I was diagnosed, I cried my eyes out when they told me I needed chemo as a precaution,” she shared. “But with my second diagnosis, I was begging for that chemo.”
Her post included two contrasting images: one of Jacquie undergoing treatment, exhausted and battling the disease, and another showing her glammed up on the red carpet, a stark contrast to the struggle behind the scenes. The candid photo set the stage for her heartbreaking confession about her fight for survival.
Jacquie admitted that, at times, she truly feared for her life. “I was still working at Sky News through it all, convincing myself that everything was normal. Everything was NOT normal,” she revealed. “I was terrified I was going to die. But you know, you push through, somehow, with your imaginary shields.”
After completing 12 rounds of chemotherapy, Jacquie reflected on the toll the illness had taken on her body. “I lost the feeling in my feet, had mouth ulcers, a funny tummy, and of course, my hair was falling out daily,” she wrote. “But I did whatever it took to survive. I kept going.”
Now, six years on from her stage 4 diagnosis, Jacquie is living with a hopeful outlook. She continues her cancer treatment with a medication that’s helped her remain in remission. “I’m unbelievably lucky,” she wrote. “But I still live scan to scan, always wondering when the tablets will stop working. Hopefully, I won’t have to face that, but who knows?”
Jacquie acknowledged the ongoing challenges of balancing her demanding career and the physical toll of living with cancer. “I’m sometimes knackered, but I don’t know if that’s because I get up at 3:45 for my job or the medication that says it might make you knackered,” she added, showing her characteristic humor despite the hardship.
Her emotional post has resonated deeply with fans and fellow presenters. Ali Bender, a fellow sports presenter, commented, “This is a great idea. Inspiring to see people coming out the other side, though of course, it’s always a part of your story and ongoing.” Fans have flooded the post with messages of support, praising Jacquie for her courage. One fan wrote, “Thank you so much for sharing, Jacquie xx,” while another added, “You are a true inspiration!”
Jacquie’s story is one of resilience, strength, and the power of hope. She continues to inspire people everywhere with her ability to face each day, one step at a time.
