The View co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin has opened up about a deeply emotional and unexpectedly difficult chapter surrounding the birth of her first child, revealing that a frightening complication during labor ultimately inspired a last-minute decision that changed her son’s name forever.
Just hours after returning to The View following a two-month maternity leave, Griffin shared new details about her February birth experience while appearing on the show’s companion podcast, Behind the Table, with executive producer Brian Teta. :max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/Alyssa-Farah-Griffin-1-041426-f6632cf10462495ba305c1002716e55a.jpg)
Teta noted that Griffin’s relatively short maternity leave had been entirely her own choice. The 36-year-old political commentator confirmed that returning when she did felt right for her family.
“To me, it ended up feeling perfect,” Griffin explained. She added that the show’s filming schedule allows her to leave work by midafternoon and spend the rest of the day with her newborn son.
However, the conversation quickly turned to the unexpected challenges she faced during labor and delivery.
Griffin revealed that she originally planned to give her son a different name, but a series of emotional events during what she described as a “somewhat traumatic” birth experience led her to make a different choice.
According to Griffin, doctors decided to induce labor after complications arose late in her pregnancy. The induction process proved physically exhausting, leaving her sick for hours.
“I had to be induced,” she recalled. “I started having an issue that’s hard to explain, but he came a few days early.”
The medication used to trigger labor caused severe nausea, and Griffin said she spent roughly eight hours vomiting before eventually delivering her son.
But the most frightening moment came after the birth.
Once baby Justin arrived, Griffin experienced a serious complication when her placenta failed to detach properly. The condition led to significant bleeding and required immediate medical attention.
“Once he was born, my placenta got stuck, so I started to hemorrhage,” she explained. :max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/Alyssa-Farah-Griffin-2-041426-30e7929243ed4d4daeac2cb4fb4f1bf4.jpg)
The situation unfolded during what should have been one of the happiest moments of her life. Griffin described the contrast as overwhelming—holding her baby for the first time while simultaneously facing a frightening medical emergency.
After several hours of active labor, she finally got the chance to hold her newborn son. Yet before long, doctors needed to take her into the operating room.
During those emotional moments, Griffin said a flood of memories rushed through her mind.
As she looked at her husband, Justin Griffin, she reflected on everything they had endured together during their years-long journey to parenthood.
“I looked at my husband and everything flashed before my eyes,” she said.
The View star recalled the emotional and physical toll of undergoing IVF treatments, including two years of procedures, medications, financial strain, and the stress that often accompanied the process.
She acknowledged that fertility treatments can place tremendous pressure on relationships, joking that her husband saw a very different version of her throughout the experience.
The difficult labor, combined with memories of their IVF journey and her husband’s unwavering support, ultimately inspired her final decision regarding their son’s name.
Griffin revealed that in that moment she knew she wanted her child to be named after his father.
“I was like, this is Justin,” she said. “This is somebody I can only hope is going to be a kind, decent, humble, amazing man like my husband.”
She added that once the idea came to her, the name simply felt right.
The television personality has been candid about her fertility struggles for years. In 2024, she publicly discussed her IVF journey on The View and credited fellow co-hosts Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin for helping support her through the process.
At the time, Griffin explained that she and her husband had spent roughly a year and a half trying to conceive naturally before deciding to pursue IVF.
She admitted she had underestimated how challenging the process could be, particularly at her age.
“I’m only 35 and, to me, I was like, I’ve got plenty of time,” Griffin previously shared. Despite maintaining a healthy lifestyle, exercising regularly, and eating well, she said her body simply was not cooperating.
Today, after years of uncertainty, IVF treatments, and a labor experience she describes as both magical and frightening, Griffin is embracing motherhood and enjoying life with her baby boy, Justin Patrick Griffin Jr.
The View airs weekdays on ABC.
