Jesy Nelson has opened up about the emotional journey sheâs facing as her twin daughters, Ocean and Story, receive treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The 34-year-old former Little Mix singer shared new pictures of her babies, both wearing leg splints as part of their ongoing treatment for the condition, which causes muscle weakness and can significantly shorten life expectancy without proper intervention.

SMA, a rare genetic condition affecting the spinal cordâs motor nerve cells, has a devastating prognosis, with the most severe form (Type 1) often leading to death before the age of two without treatment. Jesy has been vocal about the struggles her daughters face as they undergo daily medical procedures, describing her experience as an emotional rollercoaster. She shared her hope that, despite the odds, her daughters will defy the predictions and lead longer, healthier lives.
In addition to caring for her children, Jesy has been campaigning tirelessly for SMA screening to be included in newborn blood tests. She recently visited a Scottish laboratory where newborns are now screened for SMA as part of a pilot program. Although this step is a huge breakthrough, Jesy admitted the situation is still bittersweet, as the screening could have potentially changed her daughtersâ lives earlier.
Speaking to her followers, Jesy expressed her deep gratitude for the support sheâs received, particularly after her petition for SMA screening surpassed 100,000 signatures. âThis is just the beginning,â she said, highlighting how crucial it is for families like hers to have access to early diagnosis and treatment.
Despite the overwhelming challenges, Jesy is committed to raising awareness and fighting for the changes that could help her daughters and other children facing similar battles. âMy girls are the strongest, most resilient babies, and I really believe that theyâre going to defy all the odds,â Jesy shared, holding on to hope.
Jesy continues to focus on her daughters, putting her music career on hold for now. She emphasized that her main priority is advocating for SMA screening and giving her girls the best possible future.
