“The Hardest Role Yet…”: EastEnders Star Heather Peace Shares Emotional Cancer Milestone — After Both She and Her Wife Were Diagnosed

It’s the role she never auditioned for — and the toughest battle of her life.

Heather Peace, best known to millions as Eve Unwin in EastEnders, has shared a deeply moving and hopeful update in her breast cancer journey — marking a major turning point after months of gruelling treatment.

The 50-year-old actress was first diagnosed with breast cancer in October last year. In a decision that stunned fans and colleagues alike, Heather chose to keep filming for the BBC One soap throughout her treatment, refusing to step away from a role that had become so close to her heart.

But behind the scenes, the challenge was far greater than anything viewers saw on screen.

Heather later underwent chemotherapy, a left-breast mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, before beginning radiotherapy earlier this year.

This week, she took to Instagram to share the news fans had been hoping for — announcing she has completed the final stage of her radiotherapy treatment.

“Final round of 15 radiotherapy sessions just completed,” she wrote.
“This marks the end of a long nine months of diagnosis, surgery, chemo and radio.

“Time to piece myself back together.
Thanks for all the beautiful support.
#checkyourbreasts #breastcancerawareness.”

The post was accompanied by a quiet, powerful image — and within minutes, it was flooded with messages of love, pride and admiration.

Fans Rally Around ‘An Incredible Woman’

Support poured in from across the EastEnders fanbase and beyond.

“What an amazing woman,” one follower wrote.
“Her strength to keep filming while battling this disease is unbelievable.”

Another added: “A true legend. Wishing her nothing but healing and happiness.”

For others facing similar diagnoses, Heather’s update struck an even deeper chord.

“Seeing her reach the other side of treatment has given me hope,” one fan shared. “She’s inspiring so many people.”

Heather’s update comes just days after she revealed another devastating truth — that her wife, Ellie Dickinson, has also been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Speaking candidly, Heather explained that Ellie’s diagnosis came just as she herself was preparing to begin radiotherapy.

“Her cancer was a smaller but aggressive lump,” Heather said.
“She had a lumpectomy and then radiotherapy.

“Then I come along with my 12cm lump — absolutely ginormous — mastectomy, chemotherapy, and about to go into radiotherapy.

“She’s like, ‘Even that you have to do bigger.’
And I’m like, ‘Hold my beer.’”

The honesty — raw, darkly humorous and painfully real — left many fans stunned.

Filming EastEnders Through Fear and Uncertainty

Despite everything, Heather continued to show extraordinary resolve.

She has revealed that she filmed some of Eve Unwin’s most emotional storylines — including her wedding to Suki Panesar and the dramatic poisoning scenes involving Nish Panesar — just hours after receiving her diagnosis.

Speaking on That Gaby Roslin Podcast, Heather explained why she felt compelled to keep working.

“We got back to Brighton at seven o’clock,” she recalled.
“And I was on the road at ten past five the next morning to Elstree.”

Although producers reassured her she could take time off, Heather insisted on continuing.

“I needed to come in,” she said.
“At that point, I didn’t know what was going to happen.”

For Heather, staying wasn’t about bravery — it was about closure.

“I wanted to finish this arc,” she explained.
“Not coming in for two weeks wouldn’t change anything, but at least let me put a full stop on something that had been playing out for nearly two and a half years.”

She added:
“If we got to the end and saw them married and successful, then whatever happened after that, I could leave knowing I’d finished the story.”

Looking Forward, Step by Step

Now, having completed all 15 rounds of radiotherapy, Heather says her focus has shifted to recovery, reflection and rebuilding — supported by Ellie, their children, her EastEnders family and the fans who never stopped believing in her.

It’s a chapter marked by pain, courage and resilience — and one that has redefined what strength truly looks like.

Not just on screen.
But in real life.
