Billy Crystal was visibly emotional as he recalled the final conversation he shared with his close friend, director Rob Reiner, just before Reiner and his wife Michele were tragically murdered. Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Crystal shared his personal memories of the beloved filmmaker and the deep bond they shared.
Reiner and Michele were killed on December 14, 2025, at their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, in a shocking turn of events. Hours later, their son, Nick, was arrested, though he has pleaded not guilty to the murders and is currently in custody without bail.
Crystal, who had worked on several of Reiner’s films, spoke of their last meeting at a Christmas party hosted by Conan O’Brien, where they discussed their careers and the changing landscape of the movie industry. During their conversation, Reiner, ever the storyteller, reflected on the importance of the experiences they had made together, saying, “What you can control is the experience of making it. And those experiences stay with you forever.” 
The actor paused to collect himself as he spoke of the devastating news of Reiner’s death, reflecting on the loss of not just a colleague, but a lifelong friend. Crystal recalled that the night before Reiner’s death, they had talked about the impermanence of life and the fleeting nature of time.
“I can’t begin to think what it will be like without them,” Crystal shared, his voice breaking as he recalled those final moments. “It’s the people that you hold on to. And so I kept that in my heart.”
At the 2026 Academy Awards, Crystal had organized a tribute to Reiner, gathering the cast from some of the director’s most iconic films, such as The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally. During the tribute, Crystal described Reiner as “the most human person” he had ever met and emphasized the profound impact his films had on generations of audiences.
He explained that they had discussed the legacy of Reiner’s work, including the critically acclaimed Stand By Me and This Is Spinal Tap. “My friends, Rob’s movies will last for lifetimes because they were about what makes us laugh and cry,” Crystal said.
Crystal’s tribute also included heartfelt remarks about Michele, whom he praised for her creative contributions as a producer and her eye for photography. He also highlighted the couple’s activism, noting how they had fought against California’s anti-gay marriage amendment in 2008.
