Stage and screen legend Dame Judi Dench is being honoured in a landmark tribute after it was announced that a major West End theatre will be renamed in her honour.
From February next year, London’s historic Shaftesbury Theatre will officially become the Judi Dench Theatre, marking one of the biggest tributes ever given to a British acting icon while she is still alive.
The 91-year-old Oscar winner, known for her legendary Shakespeare performances and unforgettable role as M in the James Bond franchise, said she was “truly overwhelmed” by the gesture.
“The Shaftesbury Theatre has always held a special place in my heart,” Dame Judi said. “To have it renamed after me is something I never expected.”
The theatre’s owners said the decision was made to celebrate her extraordinary contribution to British stage and screen, with decades of performances that helped define modern theatre culture.
Company chairman Donald Taffner Jr praised Dame Judi’s long-standing connection to their productions, highlighting her role in the hit BBC sitcom As Time Goes By, which remains one of her most beloved TV projects.
He added that the team was “delighted to recognise her extraordinary talent and legacy”.
The announcement has been widely praised across the entertainment world, with fans calling it a “perfect and fitting tribute” to one of Britain’s most respected performers.
Meanwhile, another Oscar-winning star is also making headlines in the theatre world.
Actress Cate Blanchett has taken up a new role as visiting professor of contemporary theatre at Oxford University’s St Catherine’s College.
The Hollywood star says she hopes to bring a “creative rumpus” to students and encourage more young performers to get involved in theatre, adding that she wants to inspire the next generation of stage talent.
With two major theatre power moves on both sides of the Atlantic, it’s shaping up to be a big moment for the world of live performance 🎭
