Why Kelly Ripa Says Working on New Hulu Docuseries Left Her ‘Shaking from Rage’ – And You Won’t Believe the Stories

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are confronting the shocking reality of homeowners being exploited by squatters in their new Hulu docuseries Squatters: Get the F** Out of My House*. The couple, who serve as executive producers, revealed how deeply the stories affected them, leaving Ripa “shaking from rage” at the audacity and cruelty displayed.

The six-part series, which premiered Thursday, June 4, exposes the emotional rollercoaster faced by homeowners as squatters exploit legal loopholes to stay put and profit from their homes. “I’m very much, if something is unjust, it enrages me,” Ripa told People. “I was shaking through half of these stories, just shaking from rage.”

Consuelos admitted he “would be in so much trouble” if he encountered the situations himself, adding, “All the things you think to do initially are illegal. It’s not easy to remove them.” The show captures the highs and lows of eviction attempts, with homeowners often left powerless as squatters manipulate the system.

Ripa was inspired to explore the topic after reading a Vanity Fair article about a Malibu case during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I said, ‘This is wild. We have to make this into something,’” she explained. One harrowing case featured a homeowner who was arrested while trying to reclaim her property, despite doing everything legally. “She did all the right things, and she got arrested,” Ripa said.

Consuelos added, “The squatters aren’t leasing; they’re selling the house, changing the locks, and taking everything they can. It’s devastating.” The pair stressed that the docuseries only scratches the surface, with squatting issues varying from state to state and even community to community.

“It’s the audacity of the criminals and their destructive behavior,” Ripa continued. “They take appliances, fixtures, even chandeliers, rip up floors, and destroy property value.”

Viewers are promised jaw-dropping moments as the show unfolds. “You can’t believe some of the things they got away with until you see the resolution,” Consuelos teased.

Ripa and Consuelos celebrated the premiere on Live With Kelly and Mark, emphasizing the importance of legal awareness. “If you are renting or having a roommate, see this docuseries. Once a squatter is in your house, getting them out is extremely difficult,” Ripa warned.
