The Kansas City Chiefs have made their first quiet but telling quarterback move of the offseason ā and it comes with major questions still hanging over the franchise.
On Monday night, NFL Networkās Mike Garafolo revealed that Kansas City is signing Jake Haener to a reserve/future contract, a move later confirmed by the leagueās official transaction wire. The deal will become official when the new league year opens on March 11.
Haener himself appeared to acknowledge the news on social media ā a subtle confirmation that immediately caught the attention of Chiefs fans already bracing for a turbulent spring.
š A long road to Kansas City
Haenerās journey has been anything but straightforward.
He began his college career at Washington before transferring to Fresno State, where he became the heartbeat of the program ā starting 33 games between 2020 and 2022. That stretch included time alongside future Chiefs teammates Nikko Remigio and Tre Watson.
His toughness and leadership earned him Senior Bowl MVP honors ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, where the Saints selected him in the fourth round.
But the NFL didnāt welcome him gently.
A six-game suspension to open his rookie season stalled his momentum, and he never saw the field in 2023. In 2024, he finally got his chance ā appearing in eight games during Derek Carrās injury-riddled final year in New Orleans, including a tense Monday Night Football appearance against the Chiefs at Arrowhead after Carr was forced out.
By the end of 2025, however, a new Saints coaching staff chose a different direction. Haener was waived at final cutdowns and spent the season on the practice squad ā waiting.
Kansas City just gave him another door.
šØ The Mahomes shadow looms large
This signing doesnāt happen in a vacuum.
The Chiefs are navigating the offseason without clarity on when Patrick Mahomes will return after suffering a devastating torn ACL and LCL in December. Even under the most optimistic timeline, Mahomes is unlikely to be fully available until training camp.
Before Haenerās arrival, Chris Oladokun was the only healthy quarterback on the Chiefsā 2026 roster.
That reality explains everything.
š® What this really means
Make no mistake:
Haenerās signing does not signal stability ā it signals movement.
Kansas City is expected to:
-
Pursue a veteran quarterback to run offseason programs
-
Explore late-round QB options in Aprilās draft
-
Aggressively target undrafted free agents
The quarterback room is far from settled. This is just the first domino.
And in a year where the Chiefs must balance patience, protection, and pressure ā every quiet move matters.
