The Kansas City Chiefs ā once the NFLās most feared dynasty ā may have lost their edge. And Hall of Famer Jared Allen isnāt afraid to say it.
Appearing on Up & Adams with Kay Adams this week, the former Chiefs pass rusher didnāt hold back, delivering a powerful and sobering critique of the teamās recent trajectory following their crushing Super Bowl LIX loss and shaky start to the 2025 season.
ā ļø “The Fear Factor Is Gone”
Drawing from his passion for MMA, Allen compared the Chiefs to former UFC legend Chuck Liddell ā a once-untouchable force who, after one brutal knockout, was never feared the same way again.
āThat beating the Eagles put on the Chiefs⦠that wasnāt just a tough day,ā Allen said. āThey laid the foundation for how people are going to attack them. Unless the Chiefs take a long look in the mirror⦠people arenāt afraid of them anymore.ā
And the numbers back him up: While the Chiefs posted an impressive 15 wins in 2024, 12 were decided by a single possession. The Super Bowl was a disaster ā a 38-10 rout by the Eagles. And this year? They opened the season with a loss to the Chargers, looking vulnerable on both sides of the ball.
š§ What Needs to Change?
According to Allen, the Chiefs need to get back to fundamentals:
Run the ball with authority.
Feed Travis Kelce.
Control the line of scrimmage.
āWhy is Tom Brady considered the greatest? Because he played within the system. They ran the ball. They controlled the clock. The Chiefs have to do the same,ā Allen explained.
He believes that giving Mahomes a stronger run game ā and re-centering the offense around Kelce ā will bring balance back to Kansas Cityās game plan.
š But Can the Chiefs Actually Run the Ball?
Hereās the problem: the Chiefs donāt have a dominant rushing game right now.
Isiah Pacheco, expected to break out, has struggled to make a leap.
Kareem Hunt, now 30, looks like heās nearing the end.
The team didnāt make a major move at RB in the offseason ā and itās showing.
Even if the Chiefs want to run the ball, their current personnel might not be able to deliver.
šÆ Is Kelce Still the Answer?
With rookie WR Xavier Worthy likely sidelined for a while, itās clear that Kansas City will need to rely even more heavily on Travis Kelce. But Kelce, now in the twilight of his career, canāt be expected to carry the offense like he did in his prime.
āIf Iāve got one of the best tight ends to ever play,ā Allen said, āIām feeding him the ball.ā
But Kelce canāt do it alone ā someone in the receiving corps will need to step up. Right now, thereās no clear answer.
ā³ Time Is Ticking, But All Is Not Lost

Despite the criticism, Allen isnāt counting the Chiefs out ā not with Mahomes under center and Andy Reid on the sidelines. There are 16 games left to play, and plenty of time to right the ship.
But his message is clear: the mystique is fading. The league has caught up. And if Kansas City wants to stay on top, theyāll need to evolve ā fast.
āThat loss to the Eagles wasnāt just a loss. It was a blueprint. And now the Chiefs have to prove theyāre still the team no one wants to face.ā
