šŸ”„ ā€œPeople Don’t Understand What We Lost.ā€ Jamaal Charles’ Brutal Truth About the Chiefs’ Collapse

Jamaal Charles | mogcThe Kansas City Chiefs didn’t just lose games in 2025 — they lost something far harder to replace.

That’s the belief of franchise legend Jamaal Charles, who opened up this week in an interview with Chiefs Wire about the quiet factors behind Kansas City’s stunning 6–11 season.

Charles spoke while discussing his new role as an NFL Alumni ambassador for the GEAR UP Against Cancer campaign, working with the CDC to fight lung cancer. His motivation is deeply personal.

ā€œMy mama has diabetes, but she still smokes,ā€ Charles said. ā€œWith her having diabetes and smoking at the same time, it’s not good for her health. That’s why I wanted to be part of this campaign.ā€

But the conversation quickly turned to football — and what, in his eyes, disappeared from the Chiefs’ championship DNA.

ā€œI think when we were on that title run, we had a lot of pieces,ā€ Charles explained. ā€œThen those pieces started to drop off — like coaches.ā€

He didn’t hesitate to name the biggest one.

Eric Bieniemy.

ā€œMost people don’t really understand,ā€ Charles said. ā€œHe played a big role from the beginning — getting me to the running back I was. He took my career to the next level, Coach Andy Reid did too.ā€

Charles credited Bieniemy’s accountability, intensity and leadership — the traits that once made players want to fight for every yard.

ā€œThe way he holds players accountable, the way you want to play for a guy like that, the way that he pushes you — and then you still have Andy Reid. Those were the pieces that made that title run historic.ā€

After spending nine seasons in Kansas City, Bieniemy left to become offensive coordinator and assistant head coach of the Washington Commanders in 2023. He is now the running backs coach for the NFC North champion Chicago Bears — while the Chiefs are searching for answers.

Despite the collapse, Charles still believes Kansas City’s window isn’t closed.

ā€œPat, Chris, Travis — they’re part of the culture,ā€ he said. ā€œBut once you lose some of those cultural pieces, it’s hard to keep track. It’s hard to keep a dynasty forever.ā€

Still, he sees a familiar fire in Mahomes — one he recognizes from his own career.

ā€œI came back from my ACL with vengeance,ā€ Charles said. ā€œPat will come back with more. He sees what’s going on.ā€

For Charles, the message is simple:

The Chiefs didn’t just lose games in 2025 — they lost the heartbeat that once made them champions.
