đŸ”„ The Honey Badger Isn’t Done — Why Tyrann Mathieu’s Post Could Change the Chiefs Forever

Tyrann Mathieu spent 12 seasons terrorizing quarterbacks. Now, he’s ready to start shaping them.

The former Kansas City Chiefs star safety, who officially retired in July 2025, just took his first public step toward a coaching career — and Chiefs fans noticed immediately.

Reposting an article about John Harbaugh’s unlikely rise from position coach to head coach, Mathieu added just four words on X:

“Someone give me a chance!”

It was short. It was raw. And it felt like more than a joke.

Mathieu’s message comes as the Chiefs brace for a potentially chaotic offseason. Longtime defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is drawing serious head-coaching interest from teams including the Giants and Titans.

If Spagnuolo leaves, Kansas City is expected to promote from within — with defensive backs coach Dave Merritt widely viewed as the next in line.

And if Merritt moves up?
A position-coach seat suddenly opens.

Mathieu never held a formal NFL coaching role, but his reputation as a leader is legendary. During his Chiefs stint from 2019–2021, he was instrumental in transforming the defense — a fact repeatedly acknowledged by both Spagnuolo and Andy Reid.

Over his career, spanning five teams and 180 games, Mathieu recorded:

  • 36 interceptions

  • 106 pass breakups

  • 830+ tackles

He also earned four All-Pro selections, a Super Bowl ring, and praise for his community service.

On his podcast, Mathieu recently reflected on Merritt’s long tenure, saying:

“It just continues to blow my mind
when are they going to let him get his own unit? Because I think both of those guys exceed way beyond their current roles.”

He believes both Spagnuolo and Merritt have head-coach potential — and his own words suggest he may want to be part of whatever comes next.

Mathieu hasn’t formally asked to coach the Chiefs.
But with four words, he reminded everyone:

Legends don’t always walk away.

Sometimes
 they come back to lead.
