When Tom Brady speaks about retirement, the NFL listens. And this week, the seven-time Super Bowl champion had something very clear to say about one man standing at a career crossroads: Travis Kelce.
With speculation swirling after the Kansas City Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014 — and with Kelce’s contract now expired — many believe the legendary tight end could be preparing to walk away from football. Brady, however, isn’t buying it.
“He Could Still Play”
Brady, now 48 and settled into life as a FOX Sports analyst, was asked directly whether Kelce should consider retiring after 13 glittering NFL seasons. His response was emphatic.
“He doesn’t need my advice,” Brady said. “He’s had a Hall of Fame career without any of it. But he’s a stud. He looked great this year — honestly, one of the best seasons he’s had in a long time.”
High praise — especially coming from the man who famously struggled with his own retirement decision.
“I love watching him play,” Brady added. “His personality, his competitiveness, his temperament — he’s one of the all-time greats.”
Numbers Don’t Lie
Even in a season that ended in disappointment for Kansas City, Kelce’s individual production told a different story. He finished with 851 receiving yards and five touchdowns, becoming just the third tight end in NFL history to surpass 13,000 career receiving yards.
In other words: the body may be bruised, but the ability is still very much there.
“I’m Officially Jobless”
Kelce has addressed the uncertainty himself — with humor first, honesty later — on the New Heights, which he co-hosts with his brother Jason Kelce.
“I’m officially jobless, Jason,” Travis joked, referencing his expired contract. “This is my only job right now.”
But behind the laughter was something heavier.
“There’s a lot of love for the game still,” Kelce admitted. “If my body can heal and I feel confident I can give it another 18-, 20-, 21-week run… I’d do it in a heartbeat.”
For now, he says, the decision comes down to one thing: how his body feels once everything finally settles.
