Kansas City may be looking backward to move forward.
According to Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs have requested permission to interview Eric Bieniemy for their offensive coordinator vacancy—an early signal that a reunion with one of the franchise’s most influential architects is very much in play.
The request comes as it appears increasingly unlikely that current coordinator Matt Nagy will return to Kansas City. Nagy is reportedly deep into the interview process for a head-coaching role elsewhere, leaving the Chiefs to explore familiar—and proven—options.
A Coach Tied to the Chiefs’ Golden Era
Bieniemy’s name is inseparable from Kansas City’s rise.
He spent nine seasons with the organization, serving first as running backs coach and later as offensive coordinator during the most dominant stretch in franchise history. After leaving Kansas City, Bieniemy joined the Washington Commanders in 2023 as offensive coordinator and assistant head coach, before moving on to the Chicago Bears as running backs coach.
Now, with the Bears’ season ending in the Divisional Round, Bieniemy’s future is once again open—and Kansas City is clearly paying attention.
Why Players Always Listened
During his time with the Chiefs, Bieniemy earned a reputation for demanding accountability from everyone in the room, regardless of status. Star players respected his direct approach, preparation, and willingness to confront mistakes head-on.
That respect never faded.
In a moment that spoke volumes, Bieniemy made a surprise, supportive appearance in the Chiefs’ locker room during the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens in the 2023 Super Bowl season—long after he had left the coaching staff.
It wasn’t ceremonial.
It was personal.
A Move That Signals Direction
Requesting an interview doesn’t guarantee a hire—but it does reveal intent.
After a season of transition and uncertainty, the Chiefs appear eager to re-anchor their offense to principles that once made them nearly unstoppable: structure, accountability, and adaptability. Bieniemy knows the building, the culture, and the expectations.
Whether this reunion becomes reality remains to be seen. But for the first time this offseason, Kansas City’s search for answers is pointing toward a name that already knows exactly what winning looks like in red and gold.
