Dame Esther Rantzen — the legendary broadcaster and founder of Childline — is celebrating a milestone she never thought she’d reach: her 84th birthday.
Speaking with quiet strength and gratitude, Esther admitted she never expected to see this day after being diagnosed with aggressive stage 4 lung cancer in 2023. “I never expected to see my 84th,” she said with a heartfelt smile. “Every extra day feels like a gift, and I intend to make the most of every moment.”

Doctors had initially prepared her family for the worst, warning that her time might be severely limited. But Esther has defied every expectation, crediting her will to live, the support of her loved ones, and an experimental medication that, for a time, slowed the disease’s progression.

“Some days are easier than others,” she shared, “but I focus on what brings me joy — my children, my grandchildren, my friends, and the beauty of my garden. Life feels more precious now than it ever did.”
Despite her health struggles, Esther remains a vocal advocate for assisted dying laws, continuing to campaign for change while openly sharing her journey. She has also been candid about finding happiness in the small things — cozy evenings at her New Forest cottage, watching quiz shows, or simply enjoying a quiet cup of tea.
Reflecting on her journey, Esther says the greatest lesson she’s learned is to cherish the present. “Love and gratitude have carried me through,” she said. “I don’t know how much time I have left, but what I do know is that I’ll live every moment fully, surrounded by the people and memories that mean the most to me.”
As she marks this milestone, Esther Rantzen stands as a symbol of resilience and grace — a reminder that even in the face of life’s most difficult battles, every day is worth celebrating.
