The locker room was quieter than usual as the Kansas City Chiefs closed the book on a bruising season. The playoffs are over. Patrick Mahomes is rehabbing a torn ACL. And hanging over it all is one question that refuses to go away: Is Travis Kelce really done?
On Monday, head coach Andy Reid finally addressed the storm — and his message was as powerful as it was simple.
“Trav can still play,” Reid said.
No hesitation. No caveats. Just belief.
Kelce, 36, has spent the past 13 seasons redefining the tight end position, winning three Super Bowls and carving his name into the NFL record books. But after Sunday’s gut-wrenching 14–12 loss to the Raiders — a game that sealed Kansas City’s first playoff miss in more than a decade — his future feels more uncertain than ever.
Reid made it clear that the decision won’t be rushed.
“There are a lot of variables,” he explained. “Everybody wants an answer right now, but this is something you have to go through.”
Kelce himself echoed that sentiment moments after the loss. Standing at his locker, drained and emotional, he admitted he doesn’t yet know what comes next.
“I’ve got so much love for this team,” he said. “I’m going to get close to the family, go through exit meetings, and figure things out.”
Last year, the choice was easy. After the Chiefs were humiliated in the Super Bowl by the Eagles, Kelce knew immediately he wanted another shot. This time, it’s different. The season collapsed. Mahomes went down. The standard they’d lived by for years crumbled.
“Who knows?” Kelce shrugged. “Either it hits me quick or I gotta take some time.”
What is clear is this: the building doesn’t feel ready to say goodbye.
Defensive star Chris Jones pleaded for one more run, telling reporters, “We’ve been through so much together. Just one more season.”
For now, Chiefs Kingdom waits — hearts heavy, hope still flickering — as their greatest warrior steps back to ask the hardest question of his life.
