Ruth Langsford has reassured worried fans after revealing that her beloved mum Joan, 92, suffered a nasty fall and broke her hip just days before Christmas — before staging a heart-lifting comeback that left social media smiling.

The former This Morning star took to Instagram to explain her recent silence, sharing a joyful video of Joan — who lives with dementia — back on her feet and dancing in the kitchen while helping prepare the family’s Sunday roast.

Ruth explained that Joan’s injury happened shortly before Christmas, triggering weeks of anxiety and recovery.

“You may have been wondering why I haven’t posted anything of Mum in my kitchen for a while… well, she had a fall before Xmas and broke her hip!” Ruth wrote.

The 92-year-old underwent a hip replacement operation and, after what Ruth described as a “very difficult six weeks,” has made a remarkable recovery.

“As you can see, she’s recovered well after a hip replacement op,” Ruth added, explaining that it hadn’t been possible to get her mum in and out of the car until now.

“MY DANCING QUEEN IS BACK!!!”

The update quickly turned celebratory.

Captioning the clip, Ruth wrote in capital letters: “MY DANCING QUEEN IS BACK!!!” as Joan beamed, danced, and peeled vegetables for the roast — clearly delighted to be home for a few precious hours away from her care home.

Ruth shared how much the moment meant to her, adding:
“It’s wonderful to have her here again (and I get all the veg for our roast peeled of course!). She’s an incredible woman and I hope I’ll still be singing and dancing in the kitchen when I’m 92!! Love you Mum.”

Joan spent the afternoon at Ruth’s £3.5 million Surrey home with her daughter and Ruth’s husband, Eamonn Holmes, soaking up family time and clearly enjoying every second.

This is the second serious fall Joan has suffered in recent years. In 2021, she was left “battered and bruised” after slipping, making this latest accident particularly worrying for the family.

Despite the challenges, Ruth’s latest update shows just how resilient her mum remains — and why fans have always loved seeing her joyful kitchen appearances online.

A family shaped by dementia

Ruth has spoken openly in the past about how dementia has affected her family. Her father Dennis died in 2012 aged 84, after first showing symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease in the 1990s. In his final years, he was cared for at home by Joan before eventually moving into care.

Joan later developed dementia herself and now lives in a care home, though Ruth regularly brings her home for short visits whenever possible.

In a previous emotional post, Ruth described the heartbreak of watching a loved one change:
“You’re grieving for them while they’re still alive. They are physically there but their spirit appears not to be. It’s like you’ve lost them… but there they are.”

The Loose Women star has also admitted she worries about her own future. Speaking on the How To Be 60 podcast, Ruth revealed she’s declined genetic testing for Alzheimer’s due to the lack of a cure.

“If there was a test and they could say, ‘This is what you do to stop it,’ I’d do it,” she said. “But nobody can tell you that — so I almost don’t want to know.”

She added that everyday memory lapses sometimes trigger anxiety, especially having watched both parents battle dementia.

A moment of light amid worry

For now, though, Ruth is holding onto the joy.

Seeing Joan back in her kitchen — smiling, dancing, and helping with lunch — offered a rare and precious moment of normality after weeks of fear.

And for fans who have grown attached to Ruth’s “dancing queen,” the message was clear: she’s back — and still stealing hearts. 💛
