The Kansas City Chiefs are facing another storm — and this one has nothing to do with the salary cap or free agency.
On Wednesday, explosive allegations involving Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice became public after TMZ reported that a civil lawsuit has been filed against him, accusing Rice of abuse and violent behavior spanning nearly two years.
The Allegations
The lawsuit was filed by Dacoda Jones, identified as Rice’s longtime partner and the mother of his two children. According to the filing, Jones alleges she was subjected to repeated abuse between December 2023 and July 2025.
The accusations outlined in the lawsuit are severe.
Jones claims Rice engaged in “violent and abusive behavior,” including:
-
Throwing objects at her
-
Punching walls
-
Breaking furniture
The filing further alleges that the abuse caused bleeding, swelling, bruising, and physical injuries to multiple areas of her body, including her neck, face, mouth, arms, legs, chest, and shoulder.
Most disturbing, Jones claims that much of the alleged abuse occurred while she was pregnant.
Details Confirmed in Court Filings
Less than two hours after TMZ’s initial report, The Athletic published details directly from the lawsuit itself, confirming the allegations submitted by Jones and her legal representatives. Those filings echoed the claims of repeated violence and physical harm described in the original report.
While the case is civil in nature, the graphic nature of the allegations immediately escalated the situation beyond private legal proceedings.
Chiefs Respond — Briefly
Roughly three hours after the story broke, the Chiefs issued a short, carefully worded statement acknowledging the situation.
“The club is aware & remains in communication with the National Football League.”
No further comment was provided.
The response mirrors an earlier statement released by the organization in January, when Jones first brought the accusations into public view via social media.
Social Media Allegations Preceded the Lawsuit
Just over a month ago, Jones posted publicly on Instagram, alleging abuse and sharing graphic photos she claimed were evidence of her injuries. Those posts quickly went viral, prompting widespread reaction and concern.
At the time, reports indicated the NFL launched an investigation under its personal conduct policy. That investigation remains active.
Law Enforcement Status Remains Unclear
As of now, it is unclear whether a police report was formally filed in connection with the allegations.
-
Overland Park police confirmed they responded to a call at Rice’s residence in 2024, but said no abuse report was filed.
-
The Dallas Police Department, where Rice previously lived, stated it does not search individuals by name when asked about potential reports.
Despite the lack of confirmed criminal charges, the NFL’s review does not depend on an arrest or conviction.
NFL Investigation Continues
In a prior statement provided to USA TODAY, an NFL spokesperson confirmed the league is actively reviewing the matter.
“We have been in contact with the club about the matter which will be reviewed under the league’s personal conduct policy.”
That process is expected to continue while the civil case moves through the courts.
What Happens Next?
No legal conclusions have been reached. Rice has not been found liable, and the case remains in its early stages. However, the combination of detailed allegations, public filings, and an active NFL investigation places the situation under intense scrutiny.
For now:
-
The lawsuit proceeds through the civil court system
-
The NFL investigation remains open
-
The Chiefs maintain limited public comment
This is a developing story. Updates will follow as new information becomes available.
