Adam Thomas has delivered a deeply personal and unexpectedly uplifting update on his ongoing health battle — and it’s one that has struck a chord with fans, fellow celebrities, and even healthcare professionals.
The Emmerdale and Waterloo Road star, 37, has been keeping followers closely informed since revealing his diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis, a painful autoimmune condition that causes joint swelling, stiffness, exhaustion, and unpredictable flare-ups. Diagnosed in 2023, the illness now requires Adam to inject himself with medication every two weeks to keep the pain under control.
“Today is a very big day”
In a candid Instagram video shared with his 1.2 million followers, Adam revealed he was facing a major milestone — attempting to administer his injection by himself for the very first time.
“Today is a very big day, people,” he said. “Because today I’m going to try and attempt to do my injections on my own for the very first time.”
The actor didn’t sugar-coat the reality of his condition, explaining honestly what it means to live with an autoimmune disease.
“It basically means my immune system is attacking my own body,” Adam shared. “It causes a serious amount of pain.”
He went on to describe how the symptoms constantly shift — some days affecting his fingers and knees, other days leaving him in pain across his entire body.
“Smiling through the pain”
Beyond the physical toll, Adam admitted the condition has impacted his mental health too. He described days spent pretending everything is fine when, in reality, he’s struggling just to get out of bed.
“One day you’re completely fine,” he said. “And then the next day you’re in that much pain you can barely move.”
Alongside chronic pain, Adam deals with swelling and exhaustion — fatigue so severe that sleep offers no relief. On his worst days, he needs help with even the most basic tasks.
Yet, despite it all, he ended his video on a quietly triumphant note after successfully administering the injection himself.
“It wasn’t so bad after all,” he said with a relieved smile.
Praise pours in — including from medical professionals
The response was immediate and overwhelming. Fans flooded the comments with messages of support, gratitude, and shared understanding.
One follower living with the same condition wrote:
“Needed this today after five rough days stuck on my sofa with my invisible illness. Well done — it’s a bigger deal than people realise.”
Even healthcare professionals praised Adam’s honesty. A paediatric rheumatology nurse commented:
“This video is inspirational for our young patients. Thank you for sharing — it will help so many people starting their journey.”
Carol Vorderman also chimed in, revealing she uses the same treatment and offering practical advice — proof of just how widely Adam’s story resonated.
The quiet strength behind the scenes
Throughout his journey, Adam has been open about the vital role played by his wife, Caroline. Earlier this month, he shared photos of her helping with his injections, calling her “the best wife, nurse, and best friend” after 18 years together.
From medication reminders and meal prep to emotional support and late-night conversations, Adam credited Caroline with helping him navigate one of the toughest periods of his life.
“We’ve laughed, cried, argued — but I wouldn’t change a single bit of it,” he wrote in a heartfelt tribute.
More than an update — a message
What began as a simple health update has turned into something far bigger: a reminder that chronic illness doesn’t always look dramatic, that strength can be quiet, and that progress sometimes comes one small, brave step at a time.
For Adam Thomas, that step was pressing a pen into his own skin — and showing millions of others that they’re not alone.
