Tim Conway made the world laugh, but behind closed doors, he was something even more special. In a rare and deeply personal reflection, Tim’s daughter, Kelly Conway, has opened up about what it was really like growing up with the beloved star of The Carol Burnett Show. Fans of Tim know him as the master of comedy who could break up an entire cast with laughter, but at home, he was simply the dad who filled every room with warmth, humor, and an undeniable sense of joy.
In a new memoir titled My Dad’s Funnier Than Your Dad: Growing Up With Tim Conway in the Funniest House in America, Kelly recalls her childhood and reveals a side of Tim that will melt hearts everywhere. While millions of fans adored him on television, his family was lucky enough to experience his humor in its purest form — as a father, constantly making them laugh in the most ordinary moments.
A Special Bond with Her Dad
Kelly fondly remembers her special relationship with Tim. Despite being the daughter of a famous star, Kelly’s childhood was anything but Hollywood. She recalls, “My dad was so low-key that I don’t think we realized how famous he was until we got older.” Raised in a simple, no-frills environment, Kelly’s family focused on the important things—kindness, laughter, and everyday joys.
Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, Kelly and her siblings didn’t have the luxurious life many might associate with celebrity children. There were no cars on their 16th birthdays, and yet, they had unforgettable perks like attending CBS dress rehearsals on Thursday nights. “Thursdays were so fun,” says Kelly, sharing that she had the chance to visit the sets of The Sonny & Cher Show and Three’s Company with the children of Carol Burnett and Harvey Korman. “I had the luckiest, best childhood.”
The Man Behind the Laughs
At home, Tim spent much of his time in his den, writing new comedy sketches, constantly coming up with new material for the stage. His daughter describes him as having a “brilliant, brilliant mind.” He would often put himself in funny situations and observe the world around him to find humor in the everyday. Beyond his comedy genius, Tim was a skilled carpenter and tailor, building props and costumes for his own skits. “He had a workshop out back and taught us all how to build things,” Kelly recalls fondly.
A Fun Dad Who Lived Life to the Fullest
As a father, Tim Conway was the fun-loving parent, always seeking ways to bring joy to his children’s lives. While his wife, Kelly’s mother, handled the discipline, Tim was all about the good times. “We kind of grew up at the track,” Kelly confides, recalling how her dad would secretly take them out of school to attend races at Santa Anita Park. “He’d take us for opening day before Christmas, and my mom would have no idea.”
Even when out with his family, Tim made time for his fans. He was known for being incredibly approachable, often engaging with fans and making them feel at ease. “People would say, ‘Your kids are so well-behaved.’ My dad would say, ‘Them? They’re wild!’” Kelly laughs, reminiscing about the lighthearted moments that defined their family life.
Tim’s Lasting Legacy
Though Tim Conway passed away in 2019 at the age of 85, his legacy lives on, both in the laughs he gave the world and in the deep connection he shared with his family. Kelly’s memoir offers fans a glimpse into the private life of the comedy legend, revealing the father behind the beloved sketches. As Kelly explains, the greatest role Tim Conway ever played wasn’t on stage — it was being a loving father to his children.
