Kara Tointon Opens Up About Her Heartbreaking Family Tragedy and Life-Changing Decision for Health

In a powerful return to the spotlight, Kara Tointon has shared her emotional journey of battling generational trauma, and the drastic life-changing decision she made to undergo a double mastectomy after discovering she carried the BRCA1 gene.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast on March 17, Kara, who is known for her role as Dawn Swann in EastEnders, candidly revealed the heartbreaking triple family loss that led her to seek genetic testing. The 42-year-old actress explained that after losing her mother to ovarian cancer in 2018, she found out she too carried the mutated gene, which put her at a higher risk of developing both breast and ovarian cancer.

The decision to undergo surgery, which included the removal of both her breasts and fallopian tubes, was not an easy one for Kara, a mother of two. But she was determined to protect her health and her future. “It was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever made, but I’m so glad I did,” she shared.

Kara opened up about the emotional toll this “constant generational trauma” has had on her family, noting the loss of her grandmother when her mother was just 13, and her auntie’s passing at the young age of 42. “It’s been this continuous trauma passed down through generations,” she said, expressing her grief over the fact that her loved ones didn’t have the same opportunities to take preventative action.Kara Tointon speaking on BBC BreakfastKara Tointon spoke about her preventative mastectomy on BBC Breakfast today (Credit: BBC)

Reflecting on her journey, Kara revealed that sharing her experience of the BRCA1 gene has resonated deeply with others. “It’s been overwhelming, the response I’ve received. I didn’t think my journey would take such a dramatic route. At first, I was comfortable with just surveillance, but after numerous tests and biopsies, I knew this was the best decision for me.”

She went on to emphasize the importance of being proactive about health and encouraged others to be aware of their genetic risks. “It’s crucial to get checked, to understand your body and to communicate. We’re all different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. But this has been a positive move for me,” Kara said.BBC Strictly star issues health update after double mastectomy 'on the other side' - The Mirror

Kara’s brave decision and willingness to speak out are shining a light on the importance of taking control of one’s health, and she hopes her story will inspire others to take the steps they need for their own well-being.

“I wish my mum, my auntie, and my grandmother had had the same opportunities,” she concluded, offering a heartfelt message of hope for those navigating similar challenges.

In her return to acting with the stage role in The Constant Wife, Kara is not only proving her strength on stage but also raising awareness about a cause that has deeply shaped her life. Her resilience and bravery continue to inspire.
