In an emotional and heartfelt admission, Sarah Parish has shared the deeply personal story of the devastating loss of her daughter, Ella-Jayne, and how it almost tore her marriage apart. In a candid interview, the actress revealed how she and her husband, Jamie Murray, dealt with the heartache that followed the death of their 8-month-old daughter in January 2009.
A Tragic Loss That Changed Everything
Ella-Jayne was born with a severe heart defect — Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, which caused a large hole in her heart and a defective valve. For the first few months of her life, Ella-Jayne spent most of her time in intensive care, fighting for survival.
Sarah, 57, and Jamie, 50, had another daughter, Nell, later that year. While this brought joy to their lives, the grief from losing their firstborn was something they struggled to overcome.

Rather than letting the grief consume them, Sarah and Jamie decided to honor their daughter’s memory through fundraising for the paediatric intensive care unit at Southampton Hospital, where Ella-Jayne spent her final days. Their efforts began with sponsored walks and a cake bake sale — humble beginnings that, 10 years later, have turned into a full-time charity, the Murray Parish Trust, which has raised over £5 million.
How The Charity Has Impacted Lives
Sarah reflected on how the charity has “snowballed,” in her words, transforming into an organization that has funded critical medical equipment for children’s emergency and trauma departments.
“We never expected it to grow this big, but we knew we had to do something to honor Ella-Jayne,” Sarah said, her voice filled with gratitude for the support they’ve received from their community.
The Strain on Their Marriage
Sarah has been open about how the loss of their daughter put a massive strain on her relationship with Jamie. Writing in 2017, she confessed that their grief almost tore them apart: “Losing a child puts an enormous strain on a relationship. People grieve in different ways.“
The couple struggled to cope with the tragedy, but Sarah admitted, “It’s either you end up separating or, miraculously, you don’t.” Despite the challenges, they stayed together, finding ways to support each other, even when things weren’t easy.
