Jesy Nelson, the former Little Mix singer, is staying hopeful as her 8-month-old twin daughters battle a severe muscle disease. Ocean Jade and Story Monroe were diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) Type 1 shortly after being born prematurely at 31 weeks. Despite doctors’ grim prognosis, Jesy believes her daughters will “defy all the odds” and live past two years. :max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(749x0:751x2):format(webp)/Jesy-Nelson-Twins-020426-999bab4252374c0aac681a07df01e461.jpg)

In a recent appearance on Jamie Laing’s Great Company podcast, Jesy explained the harsh reality of SMA: a condition where the absence of a gene causes muscles to deteriorate and waste away. “Without treatment, the muscles would eventually stop functioning, affecting everything from breathing to swallowing, and they could pass before they turn two,” Jesy said, her voice filled with emotion.

However, the mother of two remains positive, expressing, “I truly believe they will beat the odds because they’ve already proven their strength. They had TTTS [Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome] in the womb, and despite that and SMA, they fought through it all.”
The twins’ journey has been filled with challenges, but Jesy is continually in awe of their resilience. She recalled the shock of discovering their diagnosis while they were in the neonatal unit. “They told us they may never walk or regain neck strength. But we got them the treatment they need and are hoping for the best,” she added.
The 34-year-old pop star also opened up about the overwhelming grief she felt during the first few months, as she “grieved the life I thought I was going to have with my children.” Despite the heartbreaking circumstances, Jesy is focused on the present, thanking her babies for their strength and cherishing every moment with them.
In an emotional post shared on Instagram, Jesy described the first months after their birth as “the most grueling” of her life, but she also urged parents to take swift action when symptoms of SMA appear. “Time is of the essence in saving lives,” she emphasized.
