Actor Emmett J. Scanlan, known for his role in Hollyoaks and Fool Me Once, has bravely shared the emotional details of the heartbreaking loss of his son, Phoenix, in 2019. Appearing on Celebrity Bake Off (April 12, 2026), Emmett revisited the painful experience, reflecting on how the tragedy affected both his family and his personal well-being.
In an interview on the Under The Surface podcast in 2024, Emmett spoke candidly about the moment he discovered his wife, Claire Cooper, suffering a miscarriage with their son. “I woke up and Claire wasn’t beside me. I could hear noises from the bathroom, so I rushed in, and there she was, lying on the floor with blood everywhere,” Emmett recalled.
Sadly, not only did they lose their son, but Claire also “almost lost her life” during the traumatic event. Emmett expressed the deep pain they both endured, saying, “We lost the little heartbeat that was Phoenix, our son.”

Emmett explained that while Claire sought emotional support during this time, it took him much longer to do the same. Struggling with feelings of helplessness, he admitted that he didn’t know how to cope. “I was going up for auditions, but I wasn’t landing anything, or the roles I got were less than ideal. It was tough, and my confidence hit rock bottom.”

The actor revealed that for a significant period of time, he faced what he described as his “professional and personal rock bottom,” lasting for about 18 months. “I lost all confidence in myself. I kept everything inside because I didn’t want to burden anyone. There were days when I’d sit in my living room, watching the clock, and the tears wouldn’t stop. I’ve been in those dark places.”
However, Emmett’s journey to healing began when he finally opened up about his struggles. He was surprised by how many people around him had gone through similar hardships in silence. Although seeking help didn’t erase the pain, it allowed him to better process his grief.
Emmett’s emotional honesty serves as a reminder of the importance of reaching out for support during difficult times, and his story has touched many, highlighting the strength it takes to face such overwhelming challenges.
