Jesy Nelson is once again opening up about the devastating fight her twin daughters, Ocean and Story, are enduring as they battle Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). The 34-year-old singer shared a touching image on Instagram Stories of the twins, who are now nine months old, during a hospital visit. The girls were dressed in baby grows with feeding tubes visible, awaiting examination.
In her caption, Jesy praised her little ones for their incredible strength, calling them “the strongest little girls I’ve ever known” despite the heart-wrenching challenges they face daily. Since their diagnosis with SMA Type 1, a rare and often fatal muscle-wasting disease, Jesy has become a passionate advocate for newborn screening to detect SMA early.
Despite the tragic prognosis that her daughters may not live beyond the age of two, Jesy remains determined to continue her fight. “It’s been really tough, but we’re not giving up,” Jesy shared. “We’re pushing for every baby to be tested, not just in certain areas of England but across the whole country.”
Her campaign has already led to significant progress. Starting in October 2026, the NHS will begin screening all newborns for SMA, marking a monumental step forward in the fight against the disease. However, Jesy points out that the screening will only be available in certain areas, which she calls a “postcode lottery” for families.
Jesy has been an outspoken advocate for SMA testing, sharing her journey with fans through emotional updates. She explained that the process of caring for her daughters, who require constant medical attention, is both emotionally and physically draining. Despite the hardships, Jesy believes in her daughters’ resilience and is committed to making sure their story continues to inspire change.
The singer’s journey has resonated with her followers, as she continues to share her battle for better healthcare and support for families like hers. “I’m so proud of how far we’ve come,” she says, reflecting on the campaign’s success. “It’s bittersweet because not every baby gets the same chance, but we’re going to keep pushing for a world where all babies are tested.”
Jesy has also shared moments of lightness in her journey, joking that one of her twins’ growing curls reminded her of a ‘cabbage patch doll,’ offering a small, sweet escape from the heaviness of their daily reality.
Despite the emotional toll, Jesy remains hopeful. “I really believe they’re going to defy all the odds,” she says, speaking about her girls’ strength in the face of their illness. “They’re the strongest, most resilient babies I know.”
