Alfie Boe has revealed the emotional toll of his painful divorce from his ex-wife Sarah, admitting that the separation left him in a “really dark place.” The 52-year-old opera singer, who split from Sarah in 2020 after 16 years of marriage, says it’s a shame that he “couldn’t tell the truth” about the difficult circumstances surrounding their breakup, particularly when their children, Grace, 17, and Alfie, 13, moved to America with Sarah.

In an exclusive interview with iNews, Alfie reflected on the heartbreaking moment when his children relocated, saying, “People don’t understand why the children [moved] away from me. It’s just a shame when you can’t tell the truth, and you take the higher ground.” He explained that his children had grown attached to America and their old friends, so they made the decision to move back. Alfie admits that it was a tough experience for him, but he took the “bigger path” for the sake of his family.

The breakup wasn’t just emotionally taxing—it also sent Alfie into a downward spiral. In 2022, he emotionally revealed that he spent five weeks in a rehabilitation facility after taking an overdose, a tragic result of the overwhelming grief and self-doubt that followed the separation.

Alfie spoke candidly about his time in rehab, admitting that he had fallen into a “really dark place” after the divorce. “When my separation happened initially, I went into a really dark place. It’s weird to talk about, I’ve not spoken about this in public, but I’m willing to if it can help anyone out there that needs that,” Alfie shared. He went on to describe his struggles, explaining, “I’d gone through beating myself up and hating myself and not having any love for myself, and it resulted in a foolish act of throwing some pills down my throat because I’d lost my way.”

The couple, who had lived together in the Cotswolds since 2018, had previously called the United States home. However, during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, their relationship troubles came to a head, ultimately leading to their decision to separate. At the time, Alfie confirmed the split with a statement that read: “After speculation about my marriage to Sarah ending, I can confirm that we have separated. I have nothing but love and respect for Sarah, who’s been an incredible partner and an amazing mother to our two beautiful children, and everything is very amicable.”

Though the couple’s separation was amicable on the surface, Alfie admitted it took a significant emotional toll on him. Sarah moved back to the U.S. with their children, leaving Alfie behind in the UK. Despite the breakup, Alfie holds deep respect for Sarah, calling her an “incredible partner” and “amazing mother.”

Alfie first met Sarah, a Shakespearean actress, in 2002 when he landed the lead role in Baz Luhrmann’s revival of La Bohème in San Francisco. Their love story began from that moment, and the couple married shortly after. For years, they lived together in a beautiful home in the Cotswolds and raised their children in the UK before their separation.

In the years following the divorce, Alfie found love again. He confirmed a romance with Elizabeth Worth, 29, sharing a sweet photo of them together enjoying a date night at the Savoy Hotel in London. However, Alfie’s love life has also been subject to rumors and secrecy. Last year, reports surfaced about a brief fling with Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham in 2022. The pair, who had known each other for years, enjoyed secret dates but kept things under wraps due to their respective public careers.

According to sources, Hannah, whose career was rising during that time, worked hard to keep the romance out of the media spotlight, especially during the madness of Eurovision. “With Hannah’s career massively in the ascendancy, she was keen to let her work, not personal life, do the talking, so they deliberately kept things quiet,” the source said. “It was especially hard to keep things under wraps during the madness of Eurovision when all the spotlight was on her.”

Despite the secrecy surrounding their fling, the relationship eventually fizzled out, and Alfie and Hannah remain on friendly terms. Alfie, however, seems to have found a new chapter in his life with Elizabeth, marking a fresh start after his heartbreak with Sarah.

Reflecting on his painful journey, Alfie has acknowledged the dark place he found himself in and how it led him to seek help. His story of self-reflection, growth, and moving forward is an inspiring reminder that even in the hardest times, it’s possible to find hope and healing.

As Alfie continues to rebuild his life, he remains committed to being a loving father to Grace and Alfie and looks forward to the future with his new partner, Elizabeth.
