For millions of viewers, Amy Dowden’s return to the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom was already a victory long before the competition began. After battling breast cancer, enduring major surgery, chemotherapy, and an injury that forced her off the dance floor, simply dancing again was an inspiring achievement.
But when her 2025 Strictly journey ended sooner than anyone expected, Amy admitted the hardest part wasn’t leaving the competition—it was the guilt she carried afterward.
A Dream Comeback That Ended Too Soon
Amy first revealed in 2023 that she had been diagnosed with grade 3 breast cancer, sending shockwaves through the Strictly family and her fans.
Following months of treatment, including a mastectomy and chemotherapy, doctors confirmed in early 2024 that there was no evidence of disease, allowing Amy to slowly rebuild both her health and confidence.

Determined not to let setbacks define her, Amy came back once again for the 2025 series alongside entrepreneur Thomas Skinner, hoping this would finally be the comeback she’d dreamed about.
Instead, the pair became the first couple eliminated from the competition.
“I Felt Like I’d Let Them Down”
While many fans praised Amy simply for returning to the ballroom after everything she’d overcome, Amy admitted she judged herself far more harshly.
Reflecting on her exit, she shared that she had wanted to represent people fighting cancer and those rebuilding their lives after treatment.
“I’m gutted to be out of the competition because I really wanted to represent cancer survivors—and I feel like I’ve let them down.”
