Kate Garraway has found hope once again after years of financial struggles and the loss of her husband, Derek Draper. After spending years caring for her husband during his battle with COVID and dealing with financial hardships, including excessive debt from Derek’s long-term care, she has now found a new chapter in her life. 
Over the weekend, the Good Morning Britain star was seen enjoying time with a long-time friend, Liam Halligan. The two were spotted at The Railway Arms pub in Saffron Walden, Essex, where Liam’s band, The Hooligans, performed. The pair appeared relaxed, laughing, and having a great time in each other’s company, sparking rumors about a potential romance.
Liam, who is a fellow broadcaster and political commentator, confirmed on Talk TV that their relationship is still in the early stages but emphasized their deep friendship. “We’ve known each other for years, and in recent months, we’ve grown closer,” Liam shared. “It’s early days, but we’ll see what happens.”
This comes after a long period of struggle for Kate, who cared for Derek after he was left in a coma by COVID-19. His death in January 2024 left her with mounting debts, including the high cost of his care, which at one point exceeded £16,000 per month. Despite the financial burden, Kate kept a brave face and continued her work in TV and radio, including appearances on ITV and Smooth Radio.
In an effort to clear her debts, Kate sold her £1.7 million Islington property and revealed that she was facing a significant tax bill after Derek’s business closed. “The debt was excessive, unpayable,” she said in an emotional interview on Good Morning Britain earlier this year. “At the time of his death, there were two appeals that hadn’t been heard for funding.” 
Despite these challenges, Kate opened up in December 2023 about the possibility of finding love again. “Derek would want me to grab life,” she shared on the Great Company podcast. “I wouldn’t want to go through life without romantic love.”
And now, it seems Kate has found a glimmer of joy once again. Friends close to the couple have said Kate and Liam have enjoyed spending more time together. “They’ve known each other for 20 years,” a source revealed to the Daily Mail. “They have so many friends in common. It’s lovely to see Kate smiling again.”
Sources say Kate has been thoroughly enjoying her time with Liam, even meeting his close friends during a recent get-together. A close friend of the presenter said, “She has been through so much. We just want her to be happy and see her smile again.”
