Seth Meyers is opening up about his unconventional approach to parenting and the challenges that come with being a “gentle” dad. The Saturday Night Live alum, who shares three young children with wife Alexi Ashe, 41, has surprised many with his candid admission about his struggles with fatherhood.

Appearing on The Today Show, Meyers shared a deeply personal moment with co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, discussing his stand-up special, Dad Man Walking, set to premiere on HBO and Max on October 26. In the special, Meyers opens up about his parenting style, revealing how it differs from that of his strict father, Lawrence, who he described as a “drop the hammer” type of parent.

“I was afraid of my dad,” Meyers confessed, explaining how his father’s authoritarian approach shaped his own parenting style. However, his children—sons Ashe, 8, Axel, 5, and daughter Adelaide, 2—are not scared of him at all. In fact, they often find his attempts at discipline amusing.

“The other day, my kid said to his friend, ‘Oh, watch this, my dad’s about to lose it, it’s hilarious,’” Meyers admitted with a laugh. His children’s nonchalant attitude toward his frustrations seems to highlight a shift in parenting dynamics in today’s world.

Meyers, who is a self-proclaimed “gentle” parent, went on to say that his gentle methods aren’t always producing the desired results. “I’m just getting no results from my gentle parenting,” he joked, acknowledging that while his kids may give him “high marks” for his soft approach, he sometimes feels it’s not enough.

While Meyers doesn’t follow his father’s strict approach, he and his wife have implemented a system of “strikes” or warnings for their children. However, they’re still figuring out how to handle punishments and have instead introduced “soft consequences” for multiple strikes, leaving their parenting strategy a work in progress.

Despite his self-deprecating humor, Meyers joked, “I think they’re good kids, and I’m just probably not a great parent.”

In addition to his parenting confessions, Meyers also shared a glimpse into his relationship with his wife Alexi Ashe. The couple, who tied the knot in 2013, have faced their share of challenges as parents, including the early arrivals of their sons Ashe and Axel. When Ashe discovered she was pregnant with their third child, the couple opted for a home birth to avoid any unexpected surprises.

Meyers also revealed that Ashe has the ultimate “veto” power over his stand-up material, particularly when it comes to jokes involving her. She even helps him with the “tags” for his jokes, ensuring his commentary remains both funny and sharp.
